Pretty sure the opening was a glimpse at how they would make a Kanto movie. It all felt very 'Episode 1' with our main character told by a friend/mentor to try to capture a Pokemon only to have to flee from that enraged Pokemon.

It was definitely limited in regards to budget and designs - they had to rely on a lot of the starter Pokemon a lot of the time which i am guessing the in-universe explanation would be that Ryme City is a popular Kanto tourist location and Kanto trainers have to choose one of the three starters (Ash being an exception)

I feel this franchise deserves a shot at making at least a single film in Kanto with someone fighting and capturing Pokemon. If that film sucks, then let it die, but at least let us see that film. Dont let it die based on what is effectively a demonstration of how they can do IRL Pokemon and make them look convincing.
