What are you honest opinions on this flick?
Watched it again and it's not bad, I don't understand the hate.

Republic? No.
Jedi? No.
Gungans? No.
Invasion? Yes.
Love it or hate it, name another film that has spawned more discussion about filmmaking.
based and phantompilled
The B1s were based as fuck
Process them
it's pretty bad, I understand the hate
Based B1.
AOTC is worse.
It's the prequel that looks and feels the most like an actual Star Wars movie. I don't hate it as much as Attack of the Clones but overall Revenge of the Sith is a better movie.
I remember sleeping through the entire flick on my first viewing. Whatever is on youtube is the only parts worth watching.
It's flawed but genuine. Weakest parts are the Naboo ones.
Because it was shot on film and not a DV Handycam
But thats the thing. Revenge of the Sith has very enjoyable scenes but spoils it with terrible romantic acting and turning the Battle Droids from eerily powerful to cannon fodder. Its almost impossible to watch episode 3 without grabbing your remote and skipping a few scenes.
>Whatever is on youtube is the only parts worth watching.
Oh yes
youtube.com
At least they used puppetry sometimes and overall design of the movie and soundtrack is pretty good. AotC in other hand is utterly forgettable, I can't even remember single design or music that sticks out
Making Qui'gon a woman that Obi Wan is in love with would solve a whole lot of problems with Obi Wan's character
The famous RLM review more or less explains everything that's wrong with that. I don't agree with every point that's made in that video, but it does lay out exactly why The Phantom Menace is pretty much complete shite
In the prequels, George took Star Wars too seriously. It was too self indulgent, esp. the pod racing. Totally pointless.
A million times better than any of the new Disney flicks
Beautiful to look at, cool designs, and despite’s its flaws, a clever and interesting story.
>Making Qui'gon a woman
I want this.
Reddit Letter Media is fucking garbage and anyone who listens to them is an idiot
Great musical score too
>20 years to the day since it came out.
Fug.

watch this to make the film kino all the way through
This. Better than ATOC, possibly better than revenge of the sith. But the third had the emperor killing Samuel l Jackson in the most hilarious fashion possible (seriously, Palpatine’s actor was having a blast), so it gets a lot of points for that
I re-watched the prequels recently. And although I think its not as good as the original trilogy by any means, I have to admit it isn't as bad as I believed it was when I watched the famous plinkett review about 15 years ago. I grew up with the prequels and I have to be honest I did enjoy them a lot. Every episode has something really interesting and fun about it but its ruined because of stupid B-Stories and adding things in that aren't necessarily.
It's not great, but not horrible either.
bit early for Yea Forums, eh George?
The Phantom Menace >>> TFA >>> Painful Diarrhea >>> TLJ
When we were kids, mu brother and I used to put the CD of the movie's score right before going to sleep. I have a soft spot for this film, it got me hooked on the rest of Star Wars.
>I give muh money to the Reddit Letter Media Pateeon so Mike Stinkass can get drunk and tell me what to think!
it was a terrible movie that everyone hated when it was released, I didn't hear a single person say otherwise until the Disney movies started
Ok retard
>Be Gen X.
>Grow up with Prequels
>Watch Fight Club once
>Oh shit I have to act grown up and sophisticated with le wrong generation
Phantom Menace is an okay film with some great scenes and moments, Liam Neeson is good, the locations and visuals are excellent. It's not a "good" film by any metric other than entertainment value, but I still like it and watch it when it's on. If AOTC and ROTS had been good, we would all remember TPM a lot more fondly
>Seething Reddit Letter Media retard
It's funny how this movie makes normies autistically screech about how bad it is. Most of them weren't even alive when the original trilogy came out.
I love Red Letter Media's content but you won't see me giving a cent to their patreon
A communications disruption can mean only one thing — invasion.
>Darth Maul attacks them pretty early on their Tatooine adventure
>Shmee Skywalker's fuckin house falls on her because of the battle and she dies
>Qui'gonna wants to adopt the recently orphaned little Anakin because of maternal instincts
>Obi Wan loves Qui'gonna so he trains Anakin to try to hold on to her memory
You could then have based Sheev say some shit like "the recklessness of the Jedi cost you your mother then they manipulated you into joining their order because they knew how powerful you are." It also conveniently gives Obi Wan a case of the notgays and makes him seem more human.
Maybe Theed just connected its Internet connection to the phone line.
great film but the light hearted and less serious tone harms it. its the worst prequel for this reason.
prequels are peak star wars tho. everyone just hates them coz they went against their preconceptions
It can also mean that you didn't pay your phone bill
>needing a drunk film school drop out to tell you what to think
Oh dear
This, let’s be honest
Are people only allowed to like a movie so long as they were born at the time of the movie's release now?
I just like the clankers and the separatists.
>great scenes
>Liam Neeson is good
>visuals are excellent
lmao
>omgg no main protagonist
>omgg i paid so little attention i cant describe qui-gon or padme
>omg story is too complex
true masters of criticism
>palpatine's actor
His name is ian mcdiarmid and you type like you're underage
Sounds like someone's mad that a bunch of drunks make a living off of shitting on movies you like
Who are you talking about
Episode 1 is the closest thing we've got to a political drama in the Star Wars universe. And that's a damn shame.
same
I don't know what's so cool about them but I just love their design, voices and personality
The stubbornly black and white morality of Star Wars dooms any attempt at good political drama.
The RLM review.
I just remember another one
>omgg I don't understand why the trade federation are opposed to taxes
How fucking retarded are these guys criticisms. Can't believe people take them seriously when their points are so fabricated
I, like so many others was hype as fuck for this movie.
I watched the trailer like 20 times, bought toys and comics and that game for PSX and was so ready to have a blast at the movies.
My reaction to it at the time was denial, I tried to convince myself that it was good and that I just had to see it again, but eventually I accepted how disappointing it all was.
And now I'm hearing that kids these days are actually defending the prequels and shitting on the far superior sequels, it really perplexes me.
Force Awakens and Last Jedi are both pretty good.
I've never actually watched that. TPM is just fucking boring
I'm a prequel defender but Phantom Menace was the weakest of the three. The politics were just too much and it doesn't have the authentic emotions or great action sequences (Darth Maul fight notwithstanding, which was really good) that made the others great.
It's really bad.
It's extremely bloated and horribly acted and filled to the brim with bad dialogue.
The chemistry between Qui Gon and Obi Wan is non existent.
Pic unrelated
>"The Jedi cut them down like they're butter, they really are pretty useless"
I'm really on the edge of my seat now, George
lucky me, they stopped selling toys in my shithole and pirated games were everywhere so I'm less disappointed over wasting money
>authentic emotions
>great action sequences
Did we watch the same movies?
based
another happy landing
thats fine, and im sure you have valid reason for that. but the rlm are just videos that nitpick and ouright lie about points to play to peoples dissapointment in the films. in terms of critcisms they are awful, but for some reason get held up as the best criticisms of the prequels.
That’s because the OT is a fairy tale in space and everything that came afterward is trying to build a house on quicksand. Mythic hero’s journey type shit only works as allegory, it falls apart if you try to flesh out the setting using real world logic.
It was nebulous, bloated shit.
Citizen Kane
You absolute zoomer
TPM has lots of great moments but also lots of really bad moments. As a standalone movie for kids I think it is the best of the 3 prequels. But it was kind of a waste of a movie as far as the prequel trilogy story is concerned, and
>Good parts
+ Jedi on Jedi Business
+ Visuals all around
+ Lightsaber Battle
+ Pod race
+ Music
+ Qui-Gon Jinn as the last true Jedi Master
+ Plot itself isn't that bad
+ Coruscant
>Bad parts
- Child Anakin.
- Many questionable big-picture story choices.
- Too much Jar Jar.
- Not enough Obi-Wan.
- Standard Battle Droids are goofy and unthreatening
- Many major problems with the final act battle sequence, too many to list here.
- Anakin builds 3P0.
>Shit people wouldn't care so much about if the story had been good overall
Midichlorians
Gungans
Naboo
Politics
Fight Club
Citizen Kane
The Shining
Barry Lyndon
The Social Network
Yeah one thing I think about TPM re-watching it is that at least that movie works without emotional depth. The other two movies require it making the problem more critical.
>the shining
eh the shining is more controversial than groundbreaking, its still one of my favourite films.
TFA and TLJ have spawned a shit-ton of discussions about writing and what a baseline competence for films should be.
Best of the prequels, it's only one that feels like Star Wars
They're talking about movies that have spawned significant discussion about filmmaking, not necessarily movies that are considered groundbreaking
None of the prequels feel like Star Wars desu
and another thing:
The Phantom Menance has got really rich, saturated colours in it - burnt orange and acid yellow desert, lush green, violet energy fields. Compare this to the bog standard "blue LED meme" effects of the Disney star wars - the latter look like absolute shit, really generic lighting and effects. At least TPM had some sort of artistic vision to it

I liked the Boonta Eve podrace. That was pretty much it, though. It also has this sense of innocence about it that I find charming, like Battlefield Earth. It's cringe-inducingly moronic, but sincere, and you get the honest sense that George truly didn't understand how bad it was.
For me, Clones was worse; mainly because it was more boring. TPM at least got an emotional reaction from me; with AoTC I just didn't feel anything at all.
bad but better than Disney Wars.
Although the films are garbage albeit a few very good scenes and concepts. The prequels did effectively open up one of the best stages for Star Wars lore. The Republic, The Clone Wars and the Separatists are some of the most interesting a fun things Star Wars gave to its fans.
It's boring
I just want Ewan back.
Hello there.
Based B1 poster
watch out for those wrist rockets
I unironically think it's the best of the three. Sure, it has problems, but it's a fun and engaging watch, which is something 2 and 3 really struggle to achieve, in my opinion.
Namely I'd argue it's the best looking of the three. Going so digital and CGI about nearly everything in the next two was a bad move. But then Lucas was trying to push the technology, and things probably would have taken longer to get as advanced as they are currently if it wasn't for those moves, which is the same as could be said for the original three. It's just a shame those at least managed to also be good movies.
>albeit
Don’t use words that you don’t know how to use.
Should have used Hayden from the get go. Using a child actor while Padme was already played by Portman was awkward. Would have also made the feats of EP1 Anakin more believable, e.g. podracing or starfighter piloting and it would have been a smoother jump start for the romance angle. Not to mention it would have made more sense to say "he's too old for Jedi training" about Hayden as a youth instead of some kid who looked he may just have been weened off his mothers tits the day before everyone arrived.
That’s because you’re retarded.
Have sex.
This. And this has been my opinion before the disney rape.
I never thought about it that way, but it makes sense when you think about it. Lucas went all-in on Joseph Campbell "hero's journey" mythos, hence referring to the OT as a space opera. This still doesn't mean that you couldn't introduce shades of grey and real-world politics to the story, it just had to be done in such a way that was intelligible and and consistent. As is pointed out constantly, Lucas had good ideas for the Prequels, they just weren't executed well. Whenever they eventually get remade due to Disney's continued mass-retconning, I can only hold a glimmer of hope that they will be done more effectively
The prequels are unironically better than the OT.
Still nothing rivals Kotor, especially Kotor 2 when it comes to star wars.
And the people who made nu-wars should be sent to the gulag.
that is all
