I never got why people were wanking off to LOTR so fucking much. It was just a nice, though flawed, little story with a well built world around it. The main thing it has going for it at this point is nostalgia and name recognition.

As a book fan, I've been trying to figure out how this plays out for Stannis is the book. A letter of dubious authorship was delivered to the wall from Winterfell saying Stannis was defeated by the Boltons. After Jon reads the letter he gets killed. Stannis' wife and daughter are still at the wall as well as Melisandre. Stannis' wife is shown to be unstable and upon hearing the news it may be her idea to burn her daughter. But Stannis didn't actually die causing his wife to kill herself and his men to be demoralized. A beginning of the end for him.
As a side note to this, in the Aeron teaser from TWoW Euron forces Aeron to take shade of the evening. Aeron has a vision of Euron on the Iron Throne and at his side is with a tall woman cloaked in shadow with firey hands. Sounds like Mel to me and that would be awesome.

I agree with you, but I don't think its gonna be the beginning of the end for him. Stannis will have more of Jon's role, and the main conflict after he defeats the Boltons will be Stannis vs fAegon, then Euron and Dany factor in and intervene in that in some way. The Lannisters are pretty much done as a major player, and the Tyrells will follow them.
Shireen's death will probably bring back Jon, but then Stannis will either kill Melisandre, or banish her as Jon did in the show.

Tyrells are another interesting variable for me. I'm not sure we'll see Cersei blow up the sept in the books. She has zero allies in KL and common folk like the Tyrells. In the show Tommen tries to send Cersei to Casterly Rock and she refuses but I think the opposite will happen in the book and she'll be sent away. Could put Tyrells in power in KL to deal with/be eliminated by a Targaryen threat.
For a reference on this, I'm thinking of Cersei's letter to Jamie while he's in the Riverlands. In the show he returns to KL, but in the book he burns it and goes about his business.

Problem is that he couldn't work out how to implement a time skip, so now he has to spend about two and a half books rearranging everyone on the map, which requires a whole new set of motivations, plot lines, meanderings, etc. to get everyone where they need to be - magnified ten times over because there are so many fucking characters in the books that it's become a seemingly insurmountable task. Not to mention how many corners he's written himself into (an overpowered Euron, for example). It's all too big to be handled by one guy anymore - it's gone from being the series' strength to its ultimate weakness. So I wouldn't hold your breath for an ending any time soon.
