Cannes 2019 thread

What do you think of the festival so far? What films are you most excited for? I think the films look pretty good this year, the best rated film so far is Pain and Glory but there are no stinkers, seems like everyone can something that he will like in competition.
Today new Sciamma, Eggers, Malick, Honore. Hopefully Malick and Eggers are good.

>Attendees were left stunned yesterday at the Cannes Film Festival when reclusive filmmaker Terrence Malick, whose film "A Hidden Life" premiered on Sunday, suddenly materialized out of thin air at the red carpet. Malick, who was wearing a kimono and a cowboy hat, was asked by a reporter how he accomplished such a supernatural feat, to which he only replied, "Zoolander." He then abruptly proceeded up the red carpet into the theater, throwing stalks of wheat behind him while performing what experts later said was an accurate rendition of a Hopi rain dance.

>to which he only replied, "Zoolander."

a lot of people for the Eggers movie
People were waiting since 7am in front of the theater.
Hopefully it's good.

Hopefully yes. First reactions are coming right now.
>Robert Eggers The Lighthouse is a two-fer character study featuring fantastic performances by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson. Might be Pattinson’s best.

Kino
>Robert Eggers’s gripping nightmare The Lighthouse is the best thing in cannes2019 with sledgehammer performances from Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, like Steptoe and Son in hell.

I really want to watch this
Is it getting a theatrical release?

Yes, but the date is not set yet. So far according to the reactions it's pretty good. Some people call it a step up from the VVitch and Pattinson is getting praised, so is Dafoe. Strange that this wasn't in competition, it's got the best reaction of the fest so far.

>Strange that this wasn't in competition

Main competition isn't really friendly with genre movies in general.

This year is full of genre films. Bacurau, The Wild Goose Lake, The Dead Don't Die, Little Joe.

>Malick
>Good
user I..

>doubting based Terry
Get lost, heretic.

i hope its not another waifu simulator 3000 like his last three or four movies

He is working with a script, i think it will be like The Thin Red Line, The New World and The Tree of Life.

horror is looked down as a genre in france

Seems a really strong year so far, and considering caliber of some the films still to screen could be a really great year

Glad the lighthouse has been raved about as strongly as it has.
My eye is mainly on bacurau, wild goose lake, and the lighthouse from reactions so far. Have heard rumours that the traitor is going to be fantastic, excited for that one

any french anons seen pain & glory yet ? it had some really great reviews

Malick + Script = unadulterated kino

>even the still before you click play is amazing

how is the tree of life different from his later movies?

It's good

It had a script.

>And yet once again based Tarantula will steal the show and overshadow all those fancy-ass pretentious dandies
I really hope he'll be done with the editing of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by the end of the festival like he promised

It has the personification of beauty in it.

It was released a month ago. It's Almodovar's Amarcord. Not his best by a long shot, but it's ok.

*a month ago here in spain

Tell me your nazi secrets, grass

i was a bit afraid of that, usually when critics rave about a movie it's not the director's best. I'll probably still see it anyway

No he won't.

>tfw living in Cannes and never ever get to enjoy the movie festival

You should have applied for the 3 days thing they do. If you are under 25 or something like that.

now im even more excited to watch the lighthouse

i think they do some special program for people living in Cannes (or at least in PACA). There's also the 3 days or the cinephile accreditation. Else you can also buy tickets for la quinzaine, and the ACID screenings are free. You'll need some queuing for those though, i'd say around an hour but it depends on the movie and on the time.
Even without going to the fest you can still watch some movies in regular theater as they try to release some stuff and enjoy the cannes hype, this year those are the movies : The dead don't die, Pain & glory, Le jeune Ahmed & Sybil

Me too, the reviews are amazing.

At least it's much better than the one with the airplane

>A HIDDEN LIFE (fka RADEGUND): Malick back
>Wow, Malick’s latest is a pastoral epic of war, conscience and family. A true return to form and it’s got me square in the emotional bits.
Terry does it again.

Critics week is available to public, in addition to those mentioned

The original name was better imo, sucks that they changed it

>RADEGUND

Why did they change it

bump

Zero idea. Also full reactions for Malick in an hour.

>It's easy to decode Malick's choices - all the good Nazis speak English, all the others speak/scream in German while red faced. Some townsfolk that spout bile are seen to be kindly....if they speak English
Kek, jesus christ what are you doing Terry?

Wait, it's in English?

Has Malick been sighted?

Fuck is this true? I don't like the sound of this

Pretty good lineup.

Most excited for The Lighthouse (which is supposedly a winner), Pain and Glory, Lux Aeterna, A Hidden Life, Les Miserables, and the new Dumont.

Yeah, just saw a clip
This makes zero sense given that 90% of the cast is German and Malick himself knows the language
Along with the bland retitling I think this is either studio meddling
Or Malick is completely senile

Yes, check out the clip.

Source?

Rave reviews for Sciamma, and really positive reviews for Malick (with some detractors)

Can’t believe how well every single film in this festival has reviewed so far, seems an incredible year

HAS to be studio bullshit. Suits are pathetic

Malick has been doing the same movie since the last ten years. What do you expect from the critic reactions?
Do you think that, if you mix clips from his last six films into a single movie, someone would notice?

He is getting good reactions, people are saying it's his best in years. So far he has the best ratings on russian critics poll from the whole competition.

>Rave reviews for Sciamma
I hate her, she's the dumbest filmmaker in France, bourgeoise and lesbian a living cliché

>Can’t believe how well every single film in this festival has reviewed so far, seems an incredible year

There must be "the last face" every year. I wish it would be the Dolan but the guy will ened up with a prize as ususal

Why the dumbest? I have never seen her films but this one looks alright.
Last 2 films by Dolan weren't received well, especially the american one. I hope critics are fed up with his shit, he is really annoying.
