What's your opinion on films sacrificing practicality for cool factor?

I mean like in this gif it seems weird that a futuristic world would have missiles that explode on impact but it does make for cool visuals?

Why would a missile not explode on impact?

I think it’s acceptable and even preferable as long as it isn’t dumb or undermines character. Also there’s always the risk of stuff like that becoming cringe.

>move 1 cm to the right
your million dollar missile has just been wasted

Missiles don't always explode

I mean it's pretty old tech to have explode on impact missile. Most missiles these days explode as soon as they get near the target.

i think they're implying that missile was destroyed before reaching its target so therefore only the fuel exploded, not the warhead
still, it does look pretty cool

So you're telling me punching more than halfway through a missile head won't cause it to explode?

A missile would usually explode before making contact

Nevermind, I see the issue now

What if they figured an explosion from farther away wouldn’t damage the EVA, but they (mistakenly) thought there was the slightest chance it could breach its AT Field if it was up close?

I think that's the actual explanation given. These weapons barely ever harmed the angels or evas but lob enough at them at close range then maybe you can do some damage.

I am the best

That's a ridiculously large missile for such a small explosion.

OP asked for a meta discussion about the medium of television and film but everyone in the thread is discussing giant robots punching missiles

It's actually the same with ICBMs in the real world. The payload is physically very small, but it has to be that size in order to accomodate rocket engine + fuel.

>everyone in the thread is discussing giant robots punching missiles

Because he posted a giant robot punching missiles.

>eva
>robot

ro·bot
/ˈrōˌbät,ˈrōbət/
noun

1.
(especially in science fiction) a machine resembling a human being and able to replicate certain human movements and functions automatically.
"the robot closed the door behind us"

Don't they usually carry nuclear warheads though?

I think like with everything there's a limit. Sometimes you don't even notice and think about such stuff like in OPs gif and many shit in the matrix movies because they're minor and don't really distract from the movie/show.

But sometimes it does get retarded like we've seen with Game of thrones in recent times.

>eva
>machine

yes, robot. and don't bore us with in universe details like "there's the soul of a teenage girl trapped inside it" or some other Jap cap bullshit.

the human body is a machine

>usually
every single one that was ever fired at the enemy didn't.

but is literally an organic being

Evas are cyborgs

is it or is it not manufactured?

The gif ends halfway. The explosions have a much wider radius if you see the full thing.

I thought they were grown

I'd be fine with films doing this if what they thought was "cool" wasn't actually just retarded cringe instead. Sanjuro slicing a guy and creating a massive blood spray is cool. Capeshit fight scenes aren't.

To be fair, people in the series that don't know that call them robots too.

Attached: kensuke and toji.jpg (642x802, 101K)

Why fire one giant missiles then instead of swarming it with dozens of smaller ones? Is it that anime is retarded?

based retard criticizing shit he didn't watch

A missile exploding on impact seems fine especially since most laymen obviously think that's how they work. Missile goes boom when it makes touch down.
Same as grenades and mines make cool fiery explosions instead of just throwing tiny bits of metal through everyone's body.

So unless you're going for realism or so obviously wrong that laymen even call you out it's usually fine.

even the earliest angel tanks a point blank nuclear bomb

realistically there's nothing you can do against an angel/Eva except wait for it to run out of power, unless it's Unit 01 or one of the mass production Evas, in which case you're fucked. Hell, Rei punched an angel with a nuclear bomb and her Eva was still pretty much fine without an AT field.

They're cloned from Adam, except for Unit 01 which was made from the legs of Lilith, which is why they're missing until Rei retrieves the spear that was halting its regeneration. They're living things, not machines, even if they're a different kind of life form. But they're cyborgs to allow NERV to control them.

In Rebuild we get to see more of an Eva being "built", and there's clearly some sort of IV

Attached: Eva1-01_C1680_moon-giant.jpg (1920x1080, 176K)

Didn't the angel have an AT Field? I remember the EVA not having them unless they went berserk

I think this was EOE but here are a bunch of skeletons from failed prototypes. They're clones of the angels and are very much not robots.

Attached: 20140810232854!23_C300b_dc.jpg (714x534, 215K)

The AT field is always active, they can expand it.

>fanfiction

Oh right, I should just rewatch all of it I guess.

>hey're cloned from Adam, except for Unit 01 which was made from the legs of Lilith, which is why they're missing until Rei retrieves the spear that was halting its regeneration
Eva nerds this overcomplicated stupid shit is "deep"

Eva nerds believe that*

it has a fucking skeleton and blood and blinking eyes under the faceplate and very specifically a soul

That's just the outer plot of the show, depth comes from the themes portrayed in the series beyond the literal storytelling.
Of course you'd know this since you're not stupid but you still felt angry that people were discussing something you don't like so you made this post instead of closing the tab

Attached: 1554193018008.png (391x381, 185K)

how do you stop hating things only because other people like them?

It's just neat background lore

I'm not your psychologist faggot

Depends on missile, most ground target missiles dont even have much explosives in them they rely on being heavy and gaining alot of kinetic force while traveling.

Technically everything has an AT field, its just wishy washy on how its displayed in the anime. The entire reason the evas are useful is because they can like cancel out the AT field of angels.

That's not the "deep" part. I just like the scifi elements and some of the bodyhorror of the Eva units themselves. The characters are the main appeal, but the worldbuilding, art, and directing are all really good.

I think it works better if you imagine the punch itself before the explosion is in extreme slow motion.

They do both.

There is absolutely no consistency in the mechanics of combat in NGE because it's not a mecha show.

I think it depends on what you're trying to convey and if it breaks suspension of disbelief. For example, motorcycles and cars that dont sound right (IE a Ducati with the engine sound of an inline 4) in a movie will throw me off. To stick with Eva, the size of the Evangelion units changes considerably depending on shot to shot, but you wouldn't really notice if you didn't measure and compare them like some autists do.

i think the warhead was on the middle, because angels could easily catch them and destroy the warhead before it detonates

anime is no more retarded and I’d argue a lot less retarded than all the jewish cuck shit that you consume faggot

Pretty much. The fucking medieval weapons in ep 16 were the weirdest shit.

Not that it mattered since they can take a direct hit with no consequence. They were just throwing everything at it and stalling/distracting to cut the cable.

NGE looks fucking cool but i know the moment i start it it will be filled with jap """"""storytelling"""""""

>futuristic world

eva is set in 2015

Don't worry. It was written and produced in Haiti.

>To stick with Eva, the size of the Evangelion units changes considerably depending on shot to shot, but you wouldn't really notice if you didn't measure and compare them like some autists do.

Isn't this always an issue with traditional animation? A lot of things especially giant robots vary in size depending on the shot.

What is jap """"""storytelling"""""""?

its pretty standard until the later episodes

I don't know what that dud is talking about, there's battles where the Eva are nearly as tall as skyscrapers, then others where they're maybe 15 feet taller than trees.

This is an issue with anything that is fictional and larger than a house. Stuff like the US godzillas, pacific rim, etc all have that to some extent.

voice overs with a bunch of nonsense while some relatively still images are shown 50% of the time
you know typical anime stuff

like having a penguin in the fridge

i dont think any mecha series in history has had consistent sizes

Maybe not 100% but in Rebuild they try to standardize it around 70 meters tall

To be fair, it makes sense that they don't really have a set strategy. They've really only encountered Adam, which blew up and destroyed like half the planet, and Lilith, which is just crucified in Gendo's basement. The angels are extremely fucking weird and each one seems to learn from the previous ones, or at least has a different strategy. Like when NERV tries the same strategy that worked on the first few angels on Ramiel it almost instantly shoots a big fuck off laser into Unit 01.

The only real consistent weakness is their core.

True, but my point was that I didn't notice it at first.

There's only stuff like that at first. The beginning is uwu anime bullshit, mixed in with a few weird things, but it quickly changes into something actually good. It was designed to bait weebs into watching it, and hopefully convincing them to go outside. it didn't work

It's not really like that. There is very little exposition compared to most anime and when it happens it is relatively natural sounding(like it's an actual conversation between people and not a character summarizing stuff for the viewer). Except for a flashback episode but it feels warranted in it.
In fact one of the complaints some people have is how little is explained. It's practically unwatchable for the clueless mom kind of people who ask you 'who's that, why did they do that, when did that happen' when you watch something with them

I can't think of a gundam series where that shit happens
Or patlabor

>nitpicking anime
>nitpicking an anime where giant cyborg alien beings manually piloted by children fight other giant alien beings that come down from the sky in order to destroy the Earth for some reason and an entire city can be pulled down underground within a minute or two, and explosions take the shape of crosses because some jap thought Christianity was weird and exotic

Gundam is the grandpa of QUALITY

Attached: 1547944441775.jpg (1920x1080, 243K)

fine i'll watch neon jenny sis eva gay lion

>futuristic world
It isn't though

This is part of why I like it so much. There's not a lot of anime like this. It's hard enough to find books like this, let alone anime. Also, the directing is fucking great. Its not just static shots of one character monologuing.

yeah and rebuild looks like ass except for a few cool fights. Any shots of the Evas in daytime look awful.

Based and Rei-pilled

It was when it was made

Attached: 1555834496210.jpg (1024x952, 84K)

thanks doc

The combat (and plot in general) is just spectacle and a settin for the characters to get tripped up in their mental issues. It's not consistent because the show isn't about it at all.

None of it matters to the overall purpose of the show. I am sure it would've worked much the same in any number of settings.

Trick is to have one sacred element of practicality that you heavily invest in to appease the autists. John wick has a bunch of retarded cool shit but it gets guns right so no one cares.

>Needs a shield against bullets
>Can take two point blank super-missiles

It's funny how folks predicted gigantic killer robots but not the smartphone.

>tech depicted in retrofuturism seems unrealistic to people living in current year
Yes and? Did you need a thread to state something this obvious?

It's still futuristic even if it was optimistic as to where tech would be in 2015. Even if we had found an eldritch abomination in the antarctic 20 years ago we still wouldnt be building giant god clones. I mean it's not crazy in the future technology, but there's a lot of stuff that we don't have

Very true, but I still like it. It feels like an actual military fighting against an actual unknown threat. Some of the Angels are really fucking weird.

Attached: ajxyjsw7hvv01.jpg (734x542, 42K)

NGE is set in a post-apocalypse their missiles probably just suck

The AT field is just the writers' way of saying "whatever lol they win this one because their character development requires it".

That's a shot of Asuka extending the AT field to crush the jets under it

Jesus, are you really going to overanalyze Eva's action scenes of all things?

name a better episode

OP was literally just asking what was the line between stylization and ridiculous shit. You guys will argue about anything

Attached: c7c.png (612x491, 106K)

“…We shall be able to communicate with one another instantly, irrespective of distance. Not only this but through television and telephony we shall see and hear one another as perfectly as though we were face to face, despite intervening distances of thousands of miles; and the instruments through which we shall be able to do his will be amazingly simple compared with our present telephone…”

-Tesla, 1926

youtu.be/0AY27gLWhtM?t=195

Nope.

so what? blade runners are manufactured and their are organic beings

The way he worded it it's not even about the different levels of stylization but about its presence at all. I'm not sure how many people would argue that they would rather watch some jackie chan movie where he just rolls on the floor with some guys putting them in arm bars instead of flailing his arms and jumping around with completely impractical choreographed dance moves to defeat some dude twice his size.

If anybody is actually interested in evangelion, just go read the wiki and learn about the universe it takes place in. The story is very fucking whatever but everything else is neat.

Basically the angels come from these big fucking giant seed things that some intensely advanced race of living beings. They made a few different types of life forms and cast them out across the universe. Each seed comes with a key to keep it locked away until somebody removes it. They also come with instructions on how they work. Basically something interesting happens when two different seeded species wind up on the same planet. That's the while Adam and Lilith thing in the show. The Adam species is basically the ultra chad type alien life form and the Lilith one is more human and less animalistic or some shit.

OP here. I guess I should've worded it better, I was talking about the levels of stylization rather than merely the existence of it.

But my biggest mistake was using an Evangelion gif.

You even watch your own link? The Eva is immune to the missile pods they're firing at Asuka

Attached: 1532877955991.webm (700x394, 1.1M)

Giant robots are simple and straight forward.
Smartphones are a bit more irrelevant.
And even then we still mostly got the idea a lot of the time, we need a device that allows for the transfer of information to us. They just didn't get the specifics, much like how our robots don't much look like the envisioned robots in the past.
>Boomer comic bitching about Kids and their damn texting
>Over a century before it's invented

Attached: 3tq1PQqUBiWMLc1eOo5Akrf97BAZQOyvCERIuetQgvk.jpg (900x471, 152K)

I'm pretty sure the only future tech in Evangelion is the big robots. The rest of it is pretty grounded in modern day, giant underground cities aside.

imfdb.org/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion

My point was she didn't extend the AT field to crush the jets.

There are three things I hate

>a show set up to be super realistic suddenly start being unrealistic
>a show set up to be super unrealistic suddenly abandons or forgets about the unrealistic thing they previously introduced
>people bitching about realistic things being unrealistic (ramming scene in Rouge 1 comes to mind)

basically don't break the rules of the show

Sometimes the robots are taller than buildings, sometimes they're climbing up them. Different directors and writers. It's just dumb fun. The good stuff is the character drama.

You're right

>Clones and memory transfer
>Giant energy weapons
>nuclear bombs with no fallout

>un soldiers using G11s

It's always bugging me when any type of jets or helicopters fly so god damn low and within melee reach of giant robots/monsters like this

I'm glad the dog survived

>jap pilot

Wtf, those wonky looking anime guns actually exist

Anno is very much a military hardware nerd. All the Eva girls share names with ww2 japanse warships

Attached: 1556588598307.png (1773x566, 2.08M)

Also the "impervious to bombs but not punch" cliche.

Attached: sab.webm (480x368, 191K)

>futuristic world
....Eva is set 4 years in the past

Well your image kinda shows that exact thing. The bomb has to punch through the concrete to do any damage.

Are there any animes with stuff similar to the NERV siege at the end?

the end of GITS season 1

Patlabor (the movies if you want serious action-drama and the series if you want lighthearted action-comedy)

She is just showing off how invincible it is. She even brags about it before blocking all the projectiles.

It literally punches through the concrete to get to the aircraft.

This is also one fantastical aspect that you absolutely need to have in any Giant robot related movie including live action ones like Pacific rim or even the transformers.

you stop thinking about how other people will react to you and do things because they're what YOU care about, instead.

seen em

Great topic. I personally believe that for creators the best way to not go insane and actually ship something is to portray one thing in a great way and make everything else serviceable. It's unreasonable to expect from oneself or anyone else to know every aspect of what they are depicting to it's highest truth. Now that i think about it even if you develop all the details in time they can prove to be faulty like it's usually is with technology and especially user interface of technology in older sci-fi movies.

That being said i'm extremely interested in how exactly does anime convincingly portray that katana is more destructive than bullets? i buy into that shit every time and people don't usually mind either but come equilibrium and gun katas and people lose they shit (i love gun katas btw, my favorite gun magic).

>prediction for 1907
Fucking hell

Anyone that dislikes equilibrium is a pseud

For a post apocalyptic world their industrial power is pretty impressive

A sword can definitely cause more damage to a person than any 9mm

they were pretty fucked up in the Fuyutsuki flashback episode

Swords are superior in a world (= most anime/manga worlds) where the wielders are impossibly fast and strong and where swords are also impossibly durable etc.
Although that being said, I guess the next question would be why guns didn't evolve even further in such cases, and there are probably more questions along those lines, but at one point or another you just have to go along with it.
