The ending didn't make any sense. It would have been more in line with his character if he had tied them up and burned them alive in a coked-out furor.

I think the point is he's wrong. He wants forgiveness so he thinks that if he is forgivable anybody must be. Thus the rapists must be forgiven too. The nun tells him the same thing, she already forgave the rapists and in fact was hoping she was pregnant so that at least some good could have come from the rape. She knew who the rapists were the whole time and refused to tell the police. However, she neglects to realize the rapists could commit worse crimes like murder.

The lieutenant forgives the rapists, gives them the money, and then is immediately shot and killed. So he is punished for his action. It wasn't his place to forgive the rapists, that was God's decision. For taking that into his hands the Lieutenant is punished and sent to hell...

OR the lieutenant was right and God was satisfied so he kills the lieutenant in order to send him to heaven because he already wished he was dead. I don't know, but I lean towards the first option.

Watch the new one, it's much better.

Besides forgiving those two fags at the end, did the bad lieutenant really do anything wrong?
