Nobody actually does that unironically. Most non-Greece European countries have higher median incomes, and MUCH higher expendable-income/quality-of-life when you take into account the number of extras "baseline survival" payments that Americans have to pay out of pocket that Europeans don't (healthcare, cars, college education etc...) Yes, America has a number of extremely wealthy people concentrated into a few specific areas that throw off the mean-value, so there's often a higher average, but that number is useless with even the slightest bit of qualitative judgement.

However, a poor American pre-FDR or post-Reagan has to pay for almost everything out of pocket, leaving the majority with almost no EXPENDABLE income., and some with a negative expendable income (falling further into debt each month to survive.) On the other hand, other than rent and food, a European doesn't have to pay for much out of pocket that they don't want to, leaving a much higher amount of expendable income at the end of the month. Outside of Greece, and sometimes even in Greece, Europeans have a much higher quality of life.
