I don't light high fantasy and hard sci-fi. It takes a lot to let yourself be transported in a whole new word honestly. I'm fine with low fantasy and soft sci-fi. My soft spot is for stories where everything seems normal but there's something lurking underneath.

Women typically don't like fantasy, sci-fi or any other unusual setting. It confuses and irritates them, fills their little empty heads with questions such as "why is he doing that, what does that do, why don't they do that" which makes their otherwise uncomplicated liquid brain hurt. Most women can only manage 10 minutes before they feel the need to distract or play with dolls or buy some ornaments, whereas they'll expect you to sit through a four hour drama/romance film.
A small proportion of women can enjoy fantasy films, they like the scenery and the poetry of the whole experience. Very few women can appreciate sci-fi, but I expect that has increased slightly because of technology becoming so prevalent in life that it is not such an indirect and cerebrally abstract shock to them, also largely in part to all sci-fi nowadays being reduced to the lowest common denominator for mass appeal, and instead being turned into space opera.
Try finding a woman who enjoys the quiet, thoughtful sci-fi which could be found in the 70s, that's a challenge.
In short, women are focussed on emotions for the most part, and men on thought or action.

It probably doesn't help that most depictions of women in fantasy and sci-fi aren't very flattering for women.

In LotR, for example, you have an excellent female depiction in the form of Eowyn, who kills the Witch King. But the vast majority of the screen-time, in both books and movies, is devoted to male characters. Next to zero females depicted at all across hours/chapters of content.

I know in the Conan stories that women are often just prizes that Conan carries away after killing whatever wizard/monster/gang of the week he's up against, or they are always hopelessly sexually attracted to his alpha status. In The Black Colossus, Princess Yesmela knows Conan for just a few minutes and is already growing a powerful sexual attraction towards this random guy she just met. In Queen of the Black Coast, the pirate queen Belit falls in love with Conan at first sight, after watching him murder a bunch of her crewmen. The sexual attraction toward's Conan is instant and irresistible, it reads like a lonely dude's fap-fiction sometimes.

Game of Thrones the TV show is as popular as it is among women largely because of how strongly Daenerys is depicted (not necessarily positively, I mean *strongly*). Dany, starting out as a timid, abused little girl, finds her courage, and is faced with a series of tough situations and asshole people all opposing her, and she overcomes them all. Witches, warlocks, slavers, tyrants, savages, warlords, nobles, knights, and the undead all take a swing at her, and they all end up as ash. Her drive is inspiring.

It also doesn't help that lots of sci-fi/fantasy fans themselves are horribly hostile towards women, non-whites, non-heteros, etc. They don't want to watch the genre because they don't want to deal with the asshole fans. They feel unwelcome. See the following posts:

take one look at the entirety of history, and see what men were doing and what women were doing. it stands to reason that stories would be based on reality, the same reason why you don't fill a tale with alligators doing their tax returns, unless it is a surrealistic joke.
the eowyn scene is there for a specific reason, lifted from the Scottish play, and not as a deposition of females overall.
women are women, men are men, sometimes there are exceptions, but they are just that.

as for nonwhites, why should there be any at all in fantasy when there were none in history, beyond being enemies. why should there be any women or non whites in sci-fi, when there were almost none whatsoever in real science. why should white men have to write anything FOR women or non whites, especially when it won't sell.

Sure, that's correct. Fantasy is certainly more accessible to men/intended for them but that doesn't mean women can't enjoy it or even typically don't enjoy it.
