The anime is supplemental, it varies from ok to really good but the nature of it means you miss out on a lot of small details and the intricacies of Araki's artwork and how it evolves over time

Start with Phantom Blood. Parts one, two, and three work really well as a trilogy and tie everything that started in Part one together nicely. The other parts don't really have that much but they are pretty enjoyable.

Everything should be read/watched in chronological order. I don't think there's anything inherently worse about either the manga or anime. You could probably get through the manga much faster than watching, but the anime makes a lot of fights pretty cool.

Part 4 sucks. It's nothing but slice of life shit, and feels like it's not building to anything. The previous 3 parts, especially SDC, felt like the characters were slowly making progress toward an end goal. In Part 4, they do nothing until like halfway through the part, then suddenly a random murder mystery plot starts.

Haven't seen Part 5, so I can't say much, other than I don't like the colors. And Giorno and his friends look really gay.

Part 5 anime has been great and the villains are really fun.

Nothing is better than phantom blood, battle tendency, and then stardust crusaders. After that the whole stand thing gets old. Also they dropped the ball hard by not having their stands use hamone more.

But anime clicked with me only after a few episodes with Joseph. But I think it’s worth it to watch from the beginning just to witness how it gradually gets more bizzare. Also it’s not even that long to skip parts.
