Shield will cover a much bigger area without much mental drain. You can focus more on doing damage with the other hand. If you have to parry 5 guys at once, how is that going to be easier with one sword vs a shield which can cover a large area?

Shields sound boring, but literally since you can really kill/disable someone with one stab, unlike in stupid mmorpgs where people have "hitpoints" you don't need to "do more dps", you just need to damage them without being damaged.

Even in my video games I always choose the mace or the axe if I need a big weapon and daggers and knives are superior for quick combat. If I need range there is the spear and other assorted pole weapons. At the most the only sword needed is the Roman sword and that had the shield to make it completely effective.
