First attempt was in late 90s/early 2000 iirc, and the game was obivously never released. So he chose up front sum from earlier experiences, since he didn't believe CDPR would succeed either. And CDPR was nearly bankrupted for disasterous attempt of porting Witcher 1 to consoles.

Sapkowski obviously sold them the rights before they made Witcher 1. also he did no research, CD Projekt is the biggest vidya distributor in Poland, and those were the times before digital distibution, so they were swimming in money. Iwinski, CEO of CD Projekt, said they made Red studios basically as a passion project just because they wanted to try making their own game and had money to fund it without hurting the main company even if they didn't succeed. it was a different situation than the previous game, CD Projekt had fuck off money for production and marketing, at least in Polish reality
