The wall was a deal brokered through Jamie and contingent on him pleading guilty. When he demanded trial by combat, he forced Tywin's hand and necessitated him being sprung from jail, one way or another, if you want to continue believing that Tywin would have never executed Tyrion, which I don't think he would either. He wanted Tyrion dead, but never in a way that directly involved himself.

Eh, keeping the greyjoy plot would have required keeping the essos plot, and that wasn't going to happen since the fat man hasn't included anymore of it and D&D didn't have the patience or skill to bring even just Mereen to a satisfying conclusion.
One example of their lack of foresight and lack of patience is how they killed Barristan, and then did nothing with Mereen but have le ebin dwarf man make no balls jokes with grey worm. If they'd left him alive they still had book plot to work with for him and Mereen, and it would have made more sense when Dany left Mereen to dump it on his hands rather than some literally who thug she fucked.
Their short-sightedness as writers is really eye-watering. They left out every single subplot that was needed to make the last three seasons anything other than meandering clusterfucks, but they included the superficial aspects that ended up doing nothing but wasting time and doing nothing, eg: Sam at the citadel, Jorah with greyscale instead of Joncon, and GC with Cersei instead of (f)Aegon.
