Subverting expectations isn't hard, there are a hundred ways to subvert viewer expectations for any given event. Instead of what you've foreshadowed just do literally anything else. But if it's nonsensical that subversion will feel hollow and poorly executed.

What made events like Ned's execution and the Red Wedding work so well wasn't merely because of the brutality or the shock value of the subversion. it was that those events had been foreshadowed heavily those whole seasons and those outcomes made way more sense than our expectations that our Hero would never face the full consequences for their mistakes and would come out on top in the end which is what the standard tropes of fiction would have us expect. It was that logical consistency and the fact that protagonist didn't get exemptions when it came time to pay the piper that made it work.

Now though we have Dany with visible plot armor flying around being untouchable by entire volleys moments after her other Dragon took three dead on shots in a row without them missing a single one, just like you'd expect of a pulp fantasy Hero. All throughout the battle of Winterfell you had the main cast surviving impossible situations because they're the heroes. You had Jon safely hiding behind that tiny rock when Dragon fire took down the wall. You had Sam, Brienne, and Jaime, being swarmed and then covered in wights only to miraculously come out just fine in the next scene. You had Dany's dragon getting swarmed and and Dany left behind to die only for Jorah to suddenly appear out of nowhere as if telepathically called to action the second she was in Danger. It was all really sloppy and hard to accept from a show which earlier tried to avoid these sorts of plot armor situations.

Then you had Dany's madness which like Stannis back in Season 5 felt unnatural because they failed to bridge that gap between the character's former disposition and the sudden turn, which is exactly what GoT used to be good at.

There usually isn't anything wrong with the final seasons. In any long-running show there comes a point where fans stop watching to see what happens. They watch to see what they want to happen. If what they want to happen doesn't, then it sucks.

I can't think of very many long-running shows that didn't have the fanbase shitting all over them during the end run.

Season 3 had Yara's quest to save Theon only to turn around after 4 episodes of build up because she came up against some dogs and a shirtless Ramsey.

So really only Season 1 was a 9/10 where all the plotlines were top tier, both Seasons 2 and 3 suffered from some poorly written DnD OC.

Right and that's because of how TV shows are usually written, they're written without a clear ending in mind. To pull off a satisfying ending all the pieces have to come together in the end and fit nicely into a cohecive and working machine and all those plot threads should tie themselves up neatly which is really difficult to do when you don't know where you're going week to week.

GoT was supposed to be one of the exceptions because it knew what the ending was so they'd have the opportunity to cut out unnecessary plotlines that don't get resolved and they'd be able to foreshadow the ending from the very beginning. Yet as it turned out, despite knowing where they were going they still managed to fuck it up as if they didn't.

They rushed the fuck out of the Night King battle and some characters are getting under used in the short season. Besides that I like the developments with Dany and most of the deaths so far.

Lord of Light had an unsatisfied semi from Shireen so he brought Jon Snow back to life to cockblock Dany so she would torch King's Landing and he could cum buckets to all of the glorious people being burned alive.

Melisandre killed herself so she could meet her lord just in time to offer him her tight body to use as he saw fit while they watched the show.

The only thing that just doesn't make sense is Jon going back to the Wall for killing Dany. Was the wall not destroyed and the Night King destroyed? Are we going to go back to hunting wildlings after already discovering our true purpose? Is there even a Night's Watch to go back to? It was all plausible up until that line but that shit doesn't make any sense and is why I originally dismissed the leaks as just another fake leak because it contradicted itself. However it turned out true about every other aspect so it's like I guess we are getting King Bran, Jon killing Mad Dany, and Jon being sent to the wall for it.

Daenerys' story played out the way it was supposed to. She was always a self-centered and vengeful person and wouldn't shut up about how she was going to burn her enemies to the ground. All it took was a little push and she went tumbling into the darkness, which was her destiny. The people who are angry about her latest turn kept making excuses every time she did something bad, and finally GRRM is just like "Fuck it, she is going to burn an entire city alive after they surrender. Maybe now you will stop naming your daughters after her."

The Daenerys that exists in these peoples' heads is not the one that is in the show and especially not the books. Now that they can no longer contort their fantasy around reality, they are demanding that the reality of the show contort around their fantasy.

Daenerys already did the stuff the traces her arc as a villain's path in the books. Whether Victorion's succeeds or not is irrelevant. Her character won't do a 180 just because some bad guys turned up. If anything that will only set her further into the dark side as she keeps losing more and more of her things and has to keep doing more and more fucked up shit to keep going.

They did erode her feelings toward the westerosi nobility and her allies but that doesn't explain why she would indiscriminately kill innocents.
