You have to admit though, something changed in recent years. The band of opinions you are societally allowed to have is narrower than ever before and the pace at which these standards change has increased dramatically. This has nothing to do with democracy in a strict sense, but it has to do with democracy in practice. It's what you always see prior to the installment of totalitarian regimes: Before Hitler became chancellor and enacted laws against Jews, they were discriminated against for years already, not by law, but by a shifting society.

The point you bring up about governmental interference is very important, i.e. what can we do about it? And in my opinion: What you do, relativizing the threat, is the worst thing you can do. When twitter bans people they disagree with, they can absolutely legally do that, but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't say that it's ethically a bad choice. We are honestly not far from opinions being banned by law, the support is already there.
