It seemed obvious when reading the books that she was going to be an antagonist. Unfortunately the show tended to glorify or gloss over her more fucked up moments to appeal to fans of her. Her crazy turn, whilst foreshadowed, feels rather sudden. It amazes me in light of this just how many people watched and got invested in Game of Thrones without actually understanding it. Arya's whole story in the show until Bravos is showing how war completely fucks over common people. Christ, one main purposes of the White Walkers was to show how pointless fighting over a chair was. An anti-war series which generally doesn't celebrate violent conquerers.

It's amazing what direction can do to influence the minds of viewers. Stannis saving the whole kingdom from a wildling invasion is treated with scary villain music whilst Arya making a man eat his own sons before murdering him is portrayed as some badass victory. I think the way the show portrays extremely sadistic acts of revenge with leniency is probably the worst downfall in the writing in recent seasons.
