It wasn't sudden, but it was still suffered from the season 7 & 8 being shorter and rushed. They didn't need to do 10 seasons like HBO asked, but doing a full 10 episodes for S7 and S8 would have made all of this feel less janky.

Imagine if they actually decided to be competent again for season 7 and season 8 and we have 10 episode long seasons with a focus on a civil war in westeros between the dany/jon faction and lannister faction. We get to follow more houses than just the starks, lannisers and targaryens as both sides struggle to recruit them, there is politics, battles, stuff going on everywhere. There was so much potential and they all squandered it to make it the good guys vs ice zombies just to botch that aswell and make some half-assed ending.
