Destroy the entire fucking city, castle, and kill everyone? No. That was a heat-of-the-moment decision. I sincerely doubt she decided to that the night before. Even the writers gave some bullshit explanation for why she popped off that goes something like: "seeing the red keep triggered her with memories of how her family built it and someone else had taken it from her."

Seeing one of her dragons die during the battle (after the enemy was supposed to have surrendered), and hearing those hundreds of thousands civilians CHEERING the death of her child, is a much more believable, because now she has a reason (in her mind at least) for wanting to burn innocents and "purge" the city.
