It's not about happy endings, it's about satisfying, properly fleshed out conclusions. There's a difference between not resorting to cheap writing to make things go well and resorting to cheap writing to make them go badly.

This isn't season 1 where you can kill Boromir when nobody expects it and it's exciting because "oh shit where do we go from here?", it's the finale of the series. It's supposed to be the end of a story, so the story should be wrapped up. Instead, ever since they ran out of books, whenever there's a plot point to be reached, they jump straight to it. Characters teleport around, every scene plays out as it would from the PoV of the camera instead of the characters, the 3 smartest people turned retarded when they needed them out of the way, blah blah.

Theon died, but he went through a decent character arc to get there, so it's fine. Arya seems to be getting a happy ending (literally nothing bad has happened to her since s3) but the pacing of her story and her actions in the last season make no sense whatsoever, so it's bad.

Varys "for the good of the Realm" kinda complicates this but he'd also know it'd be bad to against the Dragon Queen and attempt to overthrow her for Jon; it'd only lead to more war

But the new Star Wars movies they will be working on is like 3 years from now. They could have had another season to flesh things out unless preproduction for a Star Wars movies takes a couple of years.

The remaining characters hold out in Kings landing with Cersei and the golden company while the city lays in ruin. Big standoff of every single army in Westeros remaining fighting off the white walkers. What happens from there doesn’t matter

Wouldn’t even mind if it was Jon and Theon against the night king. Night king still kills Theon, Jon distracts nightking enough for Arya to sneak in for the kill. Would be a cooler action sequence similar to phantom menace final fight, Theon gets a better heroic ending rather than charging like an idiot and dying right away, and Arya still gets the kill

It seems they couldn't find another way to write it. They clearly wanted the final episode to be almost entirely the fallout drama of Dany going mad; the drama between her and Jon with the climax being he kills her on the Iron Throne.

It is damn baffling, tho. They needed to lose the North and the final battle with the NK in last episode's first half which still would've left enough time for Jon to kill Dany (he went mad the episode before taking KL while Jon lost and what was left fled South)

Execution was botched but Dany descending into madness would've been fine if done right. Her torching King's Landing and killing Cersei is what leads to Bran setting up a democratic council with Tyrion and getting rid of the old system.

So Danaerys played a crucial in breaking the wheel but the price of that was losing her sanity and her life. I never wanted Jon or Dany to get the throne in the show anyway, Jon's become a bumbling idiot and Dany is an entitled, trigger happy loon who wants to burn anyone who opposes her, neither felt like they deserved it in the end.
