>The biggest and most artificial contrivance of the show is the creation of a fictional character, a Belarusian scientist played by Emily Watson who takes a suspicious radiation reading in Minsk and magically, preposterously takes over the story. She’s everywhere at the same time, forcing herself onto the investigatory commission, sitting in on meetings with Gorbachev, raiding government archives, interviewing engineers in their hospital beds, single-handedly uncovering the secret history of the faulty reactor

>Legasov recanted before his death, in interviews made possible by the rapid progress of Mikhail Gorbachev’s perestroika. In “Chernobyl,” however, Mazin puts Legasov on the witness stand at the trial and, in a stroke of pure fantasy, has him boldly denounce Soviet corner-cutting and secrecy, after which he’s hauled into a back room by the K.G.B.
>The transformation of Legasov into a daring whistle-blower and martyr, complete with a courtroom apotheosis out of “To Kill a Mockingbird,” is just one instance of the show’s propensity toward Hollywood inflation — to show us things that didn’t happen. The workers who volunteer to enter the reactor building to open water valves do so in “Spartacus” style, solemnly standing and reciting their names. The coal miners brought in to excavate beneath the superheated nuclear core flout the radiation levels by working in the nude. A tall column of black smoke pours from the reactor for days after the explosion, rather than the small clouds of white vapor that escaped in real life.

Are we FINALLY over the hump?

The entire article is negative. What the fuck?

And its fine.

Legasov really did leave tapes behind though that detailed how he pressured not to speak about other accidents that got swept under the rug and fundamental flaws in the reactor designs. Just cause he never really went on a crusade in a court room doesn't mean he thought everything was fine.

The divers who went to open the valves did not know if they were going to make it back there's nothing wrong with making that dramatic, it probably felt pretty dramatic in the moment, this whole "lel they lived so radiation doesn't even anything" attitude is stupid, lots of other people died and they very well could have themselves.

television is a visual medium you can't fault them for using more visible black smoke instead of white smoke.

>Legasov took a very strong stance against the official story that the plant's staff were entirely to blame. His resistance ruined his career. With his reputation in tatters, his health ravaged by the radiation he absorbed at Chernobyl, his disillusionment with his country’s unwillingness to focus more on safety, and feeling the weight of so many dead on his shoulders, he hanged himself on the second anniversary of the disaster - the day after his proposal for a reformed Soviet scientific community was rejected.
>Legasov's suicide caused shockwaves in the Soviet nuclear industry. In particular, the problem with the design of the control rods in Chernobyl-type RBMK reactors was rapidly admitted and changed.
It is said that his suicide was at least partly due to his distress at not having spoken out about these factors at Vienna, the suppression of his subsequent attempts to do so and the damage to his career that these attempts caused. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists also stated that Legasov had become bitterly disillusioned with the failure of the authorities to confront the design flaws.
>On September 20, 1996, then Russian president Boris Yeltsin posthumously conferred on Legasov the honorary title of Hero of the Russian Federation for the "courage and heroism" shown in his investigation of the disaster.

Yes, and now his entombed skeleton haunts the nuclear power plant.

>On the second anniversary of the disaster,[4] Legasov committed suicide[5] by hanging himself in his office.[6] Reportedly, before his suicide, he recorded himself on audiotape revealing previously undisclosed facts about the catastrophe.[7] According to an analysis of the recording for the BBC TV Movie "Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster" (where he was played by actor Adrian Edmondson),[8] Legasov claims political pressure censored the mention of Soviet nuclear secrecy in his report to the IAEA, a secrecy which forbade even plant operators knowledge of previous accidents and known problems with reactor design. The programme implied that his suicide was at least partly due to his distress at not having spoken out about these factors at Vienna, the suppression of his subsequent attempts to do so and the damage to his career that these attempts caused.[9] The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists also stated that Legasov had become bitterly disillusioned with the failure of the authorities to confront the design flaws.[10]

yea clearly Legasov thought everything was fine and he was perfectly loyal to the glorious soviet leadership. Such blatant lies out of hollywood to have him express frustration in a court room.

Ulana Khomyuk From 'Chernobyl' Is Not Based On A Real Person, But Emily Watson's Character Is Important All The Same

As you may expect from a miniseries set in the Soviet Union during the 1980s, there isn't much diversity or female representation in HBO'sChernobyl. But one of the few women in power isEmily Watson'sChernobylcharacterUlana Khomyuk. Ulana is a nuclear physicist who investigates what led to the real-life explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power station in Pripyat, Ukraine. But while Watson's costars Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård depict people from history, Ulana never existed. Yet,Chernobylcreator Craig Mazin explained toVariety'sTV Takepodcast howthe character of Ulanastill represents a very real part of the scientific landscape in the Soviet Union at the time.

1. No. They were told the tanks were empty and their main concern was putting out the reactor.
2. Firetrucks and also the water that was in the system. The explosion destroyed the pipe system so there was flooding that went to the bubbler pool in the end. Akimov and Toptunov also opened water valves to give water to the reactor that wasn't there.

1.They thought tanks were empty
2.the water tanks were opened to put ot the fire

I can't imagine the horror around Chernobyl. Just imagine that there is something "hidden" in the air, penetrating your cells at this very moment and randomly changing your genetic code by literally writing "asdadhgsdkajfgaksjfgwk" into them. So you have no idea about the outcome. Only death and suffering. If you are lucky, you die immediately.

what a lad

Whats the point in a dosimeter that only goes to 3.6?

Yeah, made this comrade killed himself after realizing RMBK reactors can't explode.

What a fag.

some guy awhile ago worked on the new steel slide shed over plant and posted some great HR pics there

IRL, the water was from the various coolant systems leaking into the sublevels. I don't know if they were aware of it during the firefighting.

The water was pumped out to a few feet to allow the Suicide Squad to enter to drain the coolant tanks. Weirdly, they lived - and some of them are still working in nuclear plants today.

Was the general who measured the actual radiation based on a real person?

1-4 weeks is not immediately

to get readings for low level contamination, and probably a lot cheaper

Loved how they all new about rad poisoning but went to watch the fire on that bridge

>If you are lucky, you die immediately
That's the thing, you don't.
Unless the radiation is strong enough to fry you, you will be marked for death and painfully suffer for months until your body lets up.

It goes to a buzz and then burns out. If you are ever holding a Geiger counter and it makes this noise, leave the are immediately. You aren't dead yet...but the margin is less than a minute.

Do you realize it's the worst reaction you can get? Either SJW crowd will be pleased with "incel ragin over strong wymmin" and will promote it even more, or SJW will attempt to make a more subtle, and thus, more effective propaganda of their ideas. Both of the alternatives are making it worse. The best propaganda is the one that you can easily dismiss and not have to fight it intensily, making SJW look stupid. Thus, the best you can do is to ignore the show or the character. Turn public opinion towards you, make yourself look like smart grown men if you don't have the willpower and need me to tell you what to do. And we have the most intelligent scientist in the world working with our friendly Comrades, the atoms! No dear Comrade, it was a simple fire. Such things are unfortunate but minor accidents do happen. And our great and hard working fire service already put the fires out! The reactors are still supplying power so there is nothing to worry about!

>dyatlov im telling you the core exploded
>IT DIDDDNNNTTTTTT THERES LITERALLY NOTHING WRONG
>meanwhile me

Most of you zoomers wont know of Three Mile Island plant, site of nuclear accident in the 70s , that was nearly your Chob , en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Mile_Island_accident

edit a fourth panel with the roastie getting her face roasted

tbf swedes are basically proto-russians

It was. Even though you can't get it from this show, it was quick reaction and sacrifice of Soviet responders which averted even greater disaster.

I want to masturbate using that shoe

I think they both hoped it was rad leaked water /roof fire, til they saw the fucking state of the plant

Any Valery Legasov video with clear audio? Holy shit I saw a snippet at a doc and jared harris sounded EXACTLY like him.

Water absorbs radiation fairly well. I think I remember reading about those pools used to cool spent nuclear fuel, that if you went swimming in those pools, you would be exposed to less radiation than outside because the water blocks radiation from space as well as almost nullifying the radiation from the spent fuel. As long as the physical contamination of the water itself isn’t bad, you might be fairly safe.

not as good as khrushchev

He saw the crumbling system around him and decided to call time on it and get the best outcome he could for the people.

But what happened to all the pets ?

Based Leader

khruschev was a meme

What was it that made everyone's skin go dark red when very exposed to the destroyed core?

you'd just get suicided with three gunshots to the back of the head instead

That's where they take all those liver transplants nobody wants. They throw them in a giant swimming pool.

what-if.xkcd.com/29/

that's why he was great

God will look on him fondly collapse of Soviet Union would have been a lot worse without him

This is correct in the UK nuke plant sellafield they use the pools for this , holding rods

Ur a faggot

just a minor sunburn, nothing to worry about, completely normal

a bunch were shot, others learned to stay the fuck away from humans after that. they bred and had puppies/kittens. a bunch of decedents still live there, and there are groups that actively work with the animals and give them medical care and stuff.

some doggos are even being adopted by people.

Light

no thats 2010's America if you have info that could lead to Hillary Clinton's arrest

the sunlight from the pure power of the larva

Dumb fucking nigger

>What's up with the Krauts?
nah, we got some heavy rain, especially in the south. Forests are still radiating today, mushrooms and boars are considered dangerous to consume.

Did someone say Khruschchev?

Attached: hqdefault[1].jpg (480x360, 27K)

He did more for the soviet citizens than any leader

>We're talking about little pussy bullets that are so small you can't even see them? and you're scared of these "bullets"? somebody get this boy his bubble, LMAO
did he go out of line there?

This show is great but I really hate the shills

is no one going to give that guy the real answer?

two shots min
the mersey where the salty scousers tears keep them alive

Pump water into the core simple as

radiation burns from gamma rays. it's kinda like a sun burn but instead of just being on the outer layer radiation burns penetrate the entire skin. they'll actually get a bit better in a few days and seem like they are recovering, and then things will get really bad (it will start to shed off, change color)

Seen in pics the packs of wild doggies bless them an wild bears and boars roam about too right ?

>thinks radiation is dangerous
>gets radiation from the sun all day

If you want more nuclear kino before the next episode, check out Into Eternity. It's about what the Finns plan on doing with all their nuclear waste. Burying in granite and paving over so that it lasts 100,000 years. They also talk about how to warn future humans about it if they manage to stumble upon it. youtube.com/watch?v=qhhbvaKHdFA

Kills cell regen , an you shut down fast

Welcome brother. We missed you.

why ever dig it up in the first place? just never dig it up lmao

yup, and apparently a lot of the wildlife is relatively fine given the circumstances

Yeah I can recommend this as well. Although it's a bit slow.

It is buried deep in natural granite caverns and sealed too , non miltary stuff

A lot can happen in 100,000 years. What if we bomb ourselves back to the stone age? They're trying to make it so that you can't get to it without industrial tools and a lot of work. People could break in to steal stuff to make weapons.

Glad the puppers and katties are ok

The shills are out in full force

Like the fallout survivors would ever want Nukes again ,
If it was low level nuke war , fallout , we would be back living in the dark ages ,
Better to face the blast and save yourself the horrible life

Awww Lovely and based bloke

We can't know what the fuck the humans of tomorrow will do. Retards could think it's a temple or tomb.

What about those that come after them? Raised on stories about how the "old world" was.

How can looking at the light from the core kill you from 300 meters away?

wow, that was mean.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hurt.

too late, man.
leaving the thread forever now, obviously i dont have anything to contribute ;_;
