They were interested specifically in Walt, because he had special powers, as shown in the flashbacks he appeared with his mother and stepfather, to the point the stepfather did not want to keep him and returned him to Michael. It wasn't because he was a kid, that was the other children and Aaron while inside Claire, this one because all babies would die due to the eletromagnetism. This had nothing to do with Walt, he was the only candidate subject to tests to avail his power. But keep pretending you know everything when even the showrunners didn't.
