Evangelion is overrated trash and anyone who says otherwise is a pretentious twat looking for meaning where none exists. Evangelion is my favorite anime and I have watched through it multiple times, written fan fiction and drawn a shitton of Evangelion fan art, and I am completely secure in saying that it is a wildly overrated and misunderstood series, because of the fact that people think it's way deeper than it actually is. Just enjoy it for what it is and accept that it's got major flaws instead of pretending that all the bad writing choices and production problems were intentional. Evangelion is not even the best anime by a long shot, even if it's my personal favorite.

Judeo-Christian imagry and Freudian ideas were just window dressing. The real commentary Eva put forth was a critique of Japanese society and how stagnant it had become. It pointed at anime culture itself as a sign of living in a post apocalyptic wasteland for Japanese people. It was about humans being terrified to connect with each other in modern scoeity.
