The city of light shit was a mistake, but it's been pretty good since.

-The nuclear reactors on earth started to finally melt down and created a firestorm that engulfed the world
-All life was killed on Earth except for 1300 people that secured themselves in a bunker, the dozen or so people who made it back into the space station and Clarke and a literal who girl who became immune to radiation due to nanites
-years pass, after the nuclear firestorm ends only a small valley is capable of sustaining life, a penal colony transport ship lands full of hundreds of convicts and they fight for control of the valley against the 1300 with far more advanced tech.
-ultimately due to both sides being petty shits the valley is annihilated and earth is beyond salvation
-everyone, cons, grounds, and space people, agree that all parties are to blame and cooperate and united aboard the convict ship
-they travel to a new world and that's where we're at

Why did this show just completely change pace somewhere after episode 4-5 in season 1? I've seen shows change between seasons but not during a season. It went from carefree teenage drama to actually serious and well made.

oh and inbetween all this there was nihilism, cannibalism, insanity, invasive chest bursting parasites and drug addiction

it's based off books but they're very short compared to the TV show, so they stories probably diverged around them but I'm just guessing

this shit degenerated into obnoxious femme power SJW bullshit that was more frustrating than entertaining to watch half the time. The original premise was actually kind of cool and the initial survival/lord of the flies aspect was what made this show.

It's these little things that remind me I'm watching a CW show.
But It's an easy way for the writers to explore the world. Quick, lazy but effective world building.

Don't think it'll get as kino as season 2 was. The bad guys, seeming like a bunch of clean cut influencer types with a lil dirt on their face for a photo shoot really hammered in that it was a CW show I was watching.

Not compared to season 2, no. That was its absolute peak. Amazing scifi pulp kino. 10/10 Then came the awful city of light, super octavia, and so on and so forth.
