While it seems quite fishy to me, given how hard it is to fine tune the extremely precise conditions to make an atom bomb (let alone one in the megaton range), to the point only a few select countries have managed it in the world, I'm no nuclear scientist, so I can't positively tell you this is complete BS.

Apparently one commie scientist crunched the numbers and claimed it was possible and that's where that rumor came from.
It is clear however that the show went for the bastardized version by taking the likely event (flash steam) and mixed it with the numbers from the supercriticality explosion theory for awe and schock value.
