In the prologue to A Dance With Dragons, we learn a lot about warging from a dying Varamyr Sixskins. Warging into a human is the greatest abomination. We read what happens when a dying Varamyr as he tries to warg into Thistle and she basically claws her eyes out, bites her tongue off, and kills herself. We also learn in the ADWD prologue "Slipping into a dog's skin was like putting on an old boot, its leather softened by wear.
