/RBMK/ Chernobyl - Ghastly remains edition

As the fuel starting heating up, the rods snapped in place locking them a 1/3rd of the way to the bottom.

previous thread had the phone lines cut off, here is my post regarding Legasov's expertise on RBMK reactors

youtu.be/faQs2_hjNZk?t=451

there. at 7:30 the screenwriter explains that Legasov was not really an expert in this particular reactor type, he just happened to be both a devout communist, loyal party member and a brilliant chemist with expertise in radioactivity. There were other people who were more knowledgable in this specific area and they often disagreed with him.

A true hero

As much as this explosion drama is memed on, it has a deeper meaning.
Most of the workforce working with RBMK reactors genuinely had no idea of the two major faults with these, even on the higher levels. Not that the faults weren't known, but they were kept a secret to prevent the spread of "misinformation" as the great comrades would put it. It was typical soviet paranoia of course.
The night shift doing the tests in particular was woefully unprepared, as they took a job that was supposed to be done by the previous day shift due to some unexpected hijinks with Kiev's power plants. They simply didn't have enough training.
So, the staff thinking that it couldn't explode is not too far fetched, as that would imply the fission process going runaway and exploding which is technically impossible to happen on commercial reactors. Steam creating the 1st explosion was probably a completely unknown cause to them. Soviet paranoia took care of the rest.

No, Reactor-chan is pure! Her glow will bring about change!

So it crashed because it hit those cables, not because the radiation degraded the rotor?

>series doesnt have any prostitute or mommy characters
>err we'll have to make someone female i guess

does the alfa rays going out of the drop first, then beta and last gamma have any meaning or is it just to look neat

Can we not.

the radiation "degraded" the pilot

I gave the last one 9/10, but episode 2 is a 7/10.

Sound and design is great, but holy fuck the dialogue took a nose dive. Like the extremely awkward first year movie students esque scene with the iodine pills. Or the embarrassing helicopter scene and then landing scene, when the beaurocrat gives the CNPP manager that twist.

I'd noticed this prior to watching this show but humorously it seems to have confirmed it, what the hell is it with Russian glasses' frames in the 80's? Did they only manufacture the "prison issue" glasses frame in that country? Everyone has the same ugly ass pair.

you can see it in the webm
it hit the cable

Apparently the cameraman that was doing the filming for all this died only one year later due to radiation poisoning.....

We're interrupting your scheduled kino flow to bring you this message from the best physicist of the soviet union:

"Trust women, you shitlords". What a great inspiration for all the little girls out there who dream of telling ma*oinds what is what during the biggest technological catastrophe in history.

And now back to our feature presentation.

Sounds like what happened with Ouchi and co.

Yeah, but I dont blame him.... trying not to fly over the core and navigate over all that shit. all while trying to get in the right position to dump all that so it hits the site...

Gamma rays blast through flesh and bone, but alpha and beta particles reflect.

Ruskie bastards.

Every 'role model' they create for little girls is fictional. Real women lack the courage, the bravery or the willingness to get dirty that true heroism requires.

Literally "There's no way we can hack into the system in t- I'm in." the character.

why is Yea Forums so butthurt?!! didn't you guys know that female ovaries literally detect radiation levels?? and that tampons are filled with a radioactive isotope of boron and every single box is labelled with complex instructions about nuclear safety and that everytime they stick one up their twat they're thinking about what to look for when dealing with nuclear accidents?!! like, omg, incels, have sex. you're a bunch of incels, and like you dont even have sex and there is nothing wrong with women shitting up shows that only men are ever going to be interested in and if you had consensual sex in the missionary position with a condom on with a women you would know that

So some fictional woman ruins this show?
Sad!

>doctor not knowing about iodine while working in nuclear plant city
I can believe that the late soviet union had doctors that retarded.

and coming from him the explaination would've made sense, he sees molten plutonium, thinks critical mass
scientist woman excluded the possibility of nuclear bomb fallout at the beginning, then tells gorbachev the reactor is gonna behave like a nuclear bomb, even though that's not possible

> Nurse
Reminder that in USSR most doctors were women already in 60s. Why do you think she is a nurse and not a doctor?

Plant workers knew the dangers. In E1 Akimov is telling the crying guy "if it's true (that the core went boom) we're dead and millions will die". The people in charge were denying/covering it up while also knowing. Firefighters show up at the hospital red-faced and vomiting so a doctor would know what the symptoms mean.

A steam explosion is not a nuclear bomb. The fallout from that potential second explosion is still radioactive though.

>$7.51
it obvious a replica

the real world counterpart survived, plus the 3 scuba bros also survived their ordeal despite having less protection and actually going inside that shit fest.

He's an old fossil gynecologist and she's a relatively young doctor (she's not a fucking nurse, some of you retards needs to fucking watch the show). It's normal for the younger generation of doctors to know about newer ways of combating diseases.

Not even going into the "reactor cannot explode, comrade" mentality these people are conditioned to listen to. Only in the USSR would a town have no/barely any iodine pills situated next to a fucking reactor (that can'rt explode, remember).

>shooting for hundreds of years

Last night's stream was awesome. The streamer showed an urban explorer going to the basement of that hospital and showing off the pile of clothes. Yes, yes Anglos. Keep alienating Slavs while importing browns and blacks.

And today he have bombs that dwarf Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Don't megatons and kilotons refer to the equivalent of dynamite/TNT?

desu, women were forced to the role of a housewife for most of human history. They weren't couraged to study those fields, nor were they expected by society to go that way.

>US Navy was using glowsticks since 1973

Dyatlov was already vomiting in episode 1, he is in hospital.

It was okay but I didn't like how they forced everyone who was not a scientist into being a literal braindamaged mong.

Everyone knows in broad terms what radiation is. These people had been through the cold war for 30 years ffs

go to the roof and take a look at the core, comrade

this is what the screenwriter said in the official Chernobyl podcast.

I love how uneducated retards on this board criticise reality for being unrealistic.

where can I watch this

Yes megatons and kilotons are relative to TNT. And as far as the explosion is concerned it's similar to what happens in some volcanos. The yield maybe exaggerated but it's sure got the slow as fuck Soviet bureaucracy of it's ass

I have a very stupid question here:

What happens if you pile up all the nuclear radiated clothes and burn them?

t

Attached: neckbeard face.png (200x195, 54K)

im glad these things are all highly radioactive, so tourists dont steal them and we actually get to preserve a piece of history

I think that's how regular folks sound like to experts in general. Everyone knows in broad terms about radiation and iodine because of that accident. Before Chernobyl it was just the friendly atom except if it was in a bomb.

This is the exact way radiation from reactor 4 spread.
Fire doesn't remove radiation, the radiated particles will be carried by the wind.

The clothes do not literally become radioactive, they are contaminated with radioactive dust. If you burn them - congratulations, you produce a shitton of radioactive smoke, ready to disperse and pollute even more land.

Legasov's short tie always makes me laugh. The spitting image of how communists dressed.

He is old enough to have gone to med school before the bomb.

Yes. Dyatlov is a common name. It's like calling it the Johnson incident. Some say the radiation in that case came from some guys whose work involved being around radioactive stuff.

How the fuck do you fly into a crane.

It's Hollywood because its a cliché used in films the world over. Young people btfo old fossils all the time, it's out of place in this show.

yes. Now instead of radioactive clothes - which can be safely dumped in a place and contained - you have a tub filled with fluid that is not only acid, but it is also radioactive. Great idea.

There's been a lot of misinformation spread about the men who went in to open the valves to empty the tanks under the reactor, even though they were expected to die they did go on to survive, however, you will find articles about how they died and were buried in lead coffins or something to the tune. Apparently Alexei Ananenko is still working in the nuclear industry according to wikipedia.

Is the part with the 4 MT nuclear bomb effects true (just after dropping tons of sand on the reactor) ? Because i can't find link for that

by making a fuckton of flights and becoming sick from radiation poisoning

I have no idea Satan, atleast on tv there is a shitton of black smoke.

you will never be the part of the magnificent 3

Time to watch for a second time.

With flesh slipping off halfway through. Also enjoy your radioactive dick and balls.

You can could in multiple steps capture the radioactive Isotopes as solids and this is partially done to contaminated feed water.
Best option is to incinerate the clothes in a closed system and dump the ashes in concrete and bury it.

Would be worth it lads.

Funny picture considering that Russia have more muslims than all of the western nations combined

Despite Ulana I am very much enjoying the series still, hopefully the next 3 keep the quality great, especially after that ep 2 ending, holy fuck that felt terrifying

And no, I dont hate her cause shes a woman, I hate the character because it is a bunch of random scientists cobbled together and possessed this amazing knowledge and ability

Firefighters were buried in zinc coffins in Moscow. The coffins were then covered with concrete. They probably mixed that in with the diver story.

Why was the dead Forrest transitioning to helis so kino?

Well Fomin did actually try to commit suicide prior to his trial

no proof

No his a commie bastard, the true hero's are the three that went in to open the things at the end of the episode

Who is the actress playing iodine nurse, anyway?

people still don't really know what is radiation. they just know it's bad thing.

was there a real risk of the entire plant blowing up once it burnt through the sand and hit the water?

I think it is fair to say there was a risk of an explosion but certainly not in the megaton range. Enough to fuck the others reactors? Maybe.

thank you based gorvachev for destroying soviet union

all the complaining had me worried but after watching it i hardly care at all

stop getting triggered so easily

The part that gets me isn't the women, it's the gradeschool tier explanation of fission from Mr scientist. Do you really expect me to believe that Gorbachev wouldn't know what fission is or how it works? That's ridiculous. Every single person in that room would have had a decent understanding of nuclear physics, and would have known all the "bullet" shit about the neutrons. It was rather obviously handholding for retarded viewers and completely broke immersionm

Gorbachev came from a poor peasant family and studied law after operating combine harvesters in his youth. Why would he need to know when there are scientists to tell him?

>wiki says they all three died

Don't expect people to understand the difference or know how people rose to positions of power in commie style systems
It definitely wasn't based on what you knew

Why the fuck would gorbachev or any of those clowns know anything about nuclear reactors on top of that they were all working on faulty info from fomin and table beater.

capitalism was a mistake

Imperialist American garbage that doesn't hold a candle to the Makarov or Tokarev. The one who made that meme has been sentenced to 5 years hard labor for his defiance.

>Do you really expect me to believe that Gorbachev wouldn't know what fission is or how it works?
A: yeah probably. Politicians aren't fucking spending a lot of time reading about nuclear physics.
B: this is a television show. Dumb characters need to exist for the audience to learn things. They're audience surrogates for plot exposition to be explained to.
> Every single person in that room would have had a decent understanding of nuclear physics
no they really wouldn't. They're largely bureaucrats. And even in briefings IRL where it's assumed that generally everyone knows stuff, they still run through it as a way to make sure that everybody is on the same page. It's a dangerous sentiment to assume that people aren't dumb assholes.

It's sad to me to see posts like this - you absolute fucking retard, YES they would have understood the most basic aspects of nuclear physics. Most people back then did, schools were not glorified daycares for niggers you actually leaned shit. Fucking moron OF COURSE Gorbachev knew about fission. It's a very, very easy to understand concept and it was something that would have been quite relevant to his interests.

They weren't meant for this decadent era.

I'm sort of fine they filmed the helicopter crash scene even though it should've happened months later, the series probably isn't going to be covering the events that far.
I don't mind them using a completely wrong stock sounds for Mi-8 helicopters and ambulance sirens. I mean it's a mess-up of their incompetent sound engineers but at least it doesn't affect the story.
I guess it's fine they packed a bunch of nuclear physicists into a made-up person - may as well make it a woman, doesn't make a difference by the USSR standards. Then again, why not just use an existing person instead?

What worries me though comes with the next episode where they may show what happens to the divers. According to the urban legends, and most of the buzzfeed-like websites, especially in English, they all died from radiation poisoning within weeks, whereas in reality they survived and two of them are still kicking, the third one having died in 2005. You can see Boris Baranov in the list here: chnpp.gov.ua/en/kniga-pamyati?start=48
So let us wait one week longer and see how they treat this series: is it historical kino or a spooky horror show. A good series won't bury the 3 people it portrays as selfless heroes alive for some minute entertainment, that would be most disrespectful. Time will tell. Remember the divers.

Okay boys, coming from someone who detests forcing stronk women into shows, you're going too far by freaking out over the scientist character.

She's not unrealistic, plenty of women were scientists in the USSR, and like the directors said she is a combination of hundreds of scientists and their efforts, some of them undoubtedly being women. She's not historically inaccurate, nor is she obnoxious or bitchy.

There's a difference between being opposed to women being hamfistedly injected into everything and simply just being an icel and hating women, shitting on anything that features a female character who has some level of intelligence.

I dont mind her bullshit that much, but to see that she has a air of superiority around her is very annoying.
Shes not even stronk, shes just an annoyingly stuck up cunt. The soldier at the gate should have brought her to Lagasov and Shcherbina, after buttstroking her with his AK for her smart mouth.

And you can see clear decline in all places you encounter multiculturalism. California, Sweden, France and it's just multiculturalism from developing undeveloped countries. Then there's altogether different kind of phenomena from Muslim countries where you'll encounter civil wars and conflict from just having them here. Lebanon is good example, as being a christian majority country for hundreds of years, but then suddenly they turn Muslim majority one, due to immigration and they have 15 year long civil war, which culminates into having to keep peace through military assuming role of the police 30 years after the war ended

it spooked me too much

Nah it will be,
>Fukushima A Netflix Original.

Police divers often operate in zero visibility. Everything by feel.

>She's not historically inaccurate, nor is she obnoxious or bitchy.

Obnoxious and bitchy is quite a relative thing. She is an "american" character, she acts as if she is in one of them "day after tomorrow" action hero scientists, NOT how a soviet citizen would act, much less a woman in soviet union.

Legasov's character shows respect to party officials, not because he respects them, but because he will end up in siberia unable to affect anything otherwise. No, you cannot just go to an army checkpoint and tell them "i know what you are guarding, just let me through lol" and not expect to spend next 5 to 10 years in a labor camp, regardless your qualifications, unless you are a high ranking party member. Nor can you expect a person to reach adulthood without learning this simple truth in SU.

But far more ridiculous thing here is that HBO is literally incapable of making a series without those imaginary womyn . Not a series about an actual event, not a fictional drama, not anything.

Now, what would you say, in the future would the amount of stuff that imaginary womyn accomplish would it stay the same, decrease or increase?

No, we are no freaking out nearly enough. You fucking nigger.

That shit had to be an exaggeration. A thermal explosion from water converting to steam? I'm noy a physicist but how does an entire volume of water become steam instantly? When magma falls into the ocean the entire ocean doesn't evaporate.

They were implying the explosion would have been from the corium reaching critical mass, not steam you fucking imbecile.
The steam explosion would have generated the pressure for the corium to reach super criticality, have you ever looked at how a fucking thermonuclear bomb works?

>the reactor room is literal hell
>the air is full of rising smoke, a screaming fire below
>a guy in a suit and helmet is standing near the edge to the collapsed room

>at his feet is an open container with a label
>it says "demon core"

Attached: d57657995.jpg (424x501, 16K)

The ocean isn't in a sealed tank you mong.

>steam induced critical mass
Seems fishy man. The precision of thr explosive lenses needed to start a bomb are insane. A random steam event pulling it off? Seems unlikely.

It's the sudden gifted thermal energy to all those radioactive particles in the water. Those booleets then split more (you)-235 in the rods all at once. Which then release more booleets to fizz the other reactors nearby.

>No! What are you doing you dumb man, I can see from these schematics that when you decided to start dumping sand on the core you forgot to drain this water tank right here, I will now proceed to drive 500km to tell you that.
I realize (don't know) that the suggestion that the water tanks need to be drained may have come from outside soviet union but goddamn it is annoying to see some mary sue roll around making assumptions that are right on the spot only because the plot demands it. If she were any worse at all this whole show would be a complete farce.

>Chechnya has fertility rate of 3.4
That's like Africa rates.
>And you can see clear decline in all places you encounter multiculturalism.
Yeah we have access to opportunities and education. Well-to-do people don't start having kids until after they spend most of their fertile years in education and training.

And what even is your argument? Muslims in chechnya are literally breeding 3 times more than muslims in the UK or anywhere else in the EU.

I still can't believe super power tards actually set these kind of bombs off

Demon core didn't exist at that point. It was melted down and made into new cores after the accident.

>A thermal explosion from water converting to steam

That's what blew up the reactor the first time - and that was even though the fuel rods were being cooled - until the reaction went out of control and vaporized the water.

>They were implying the explosion would have been from the corium reaching critical mass

No, they weren't, because it is impossible. You need at least 20% of enrichment to get a critical mass, fuel at Chernobyl was something around 3%

I'm not sure where the megaton figure comes from, but I've seen it a few times (though I've never seen the source for this estimate), so they didn't completely pull it out of their asses. If anyone knows the source I would gladly read it.

youtube.com/watch?v=Ge865CR9pN8

its alright bro, its the pacific islands

damn that girl could hit me with a brapposhima if you catch my drift

>demon core
It is a reference to an incident that occurred in the U.S. iirc during the Manhattan project. One of the cores leaked and killed anyone nearby. It was nicknamed the demon core.

Just because it isnt enriched doesnt mean it isnt capable of reaching criticality user, it just takes alot more pressure, and 7000 gallons of water flash boiling instantly creates alot more pressure than the mechanisms in a nuke.

It was the radioactive equivalent release from a 2-5 megaton bomb. Not the explosive equivalent.

Stop pretending you have any idea at all of what are you talking about, "imbecile". Neither reactor nor corium make a nuclear bomb, it's physically impossible for them to cause such an explosion.

No I dont user, care to elaborate?

This. Everyone involved in the nuclear tests that they theorized could have destroyed the world and still went through with should have been executed on the spot

new

Attached: CROSSOVER.png (1860x1188, 2.33M)

Not sure, maybe it wasn't that far into the darkness, maybe they didn't even have to submerge completely and thus were able to more easily feel their way around. I don't think a regular plant worker can make their way completely underwater in total darkness, it's too easy to get disoriented to the point you can't tell which way is up or down, plus those suits weigh a ton and are very clumsy to move around in. Takes qualifications to be able to swim in those and in conditions like that even without the fear of radiation. It's a panic attack and a floating corpse blocking the way for the next group waiting to happen.
I assume it was likely only partially submerged like they'd shown, and the divers could feel their way around similarly to how we can navigate places we're very familiar with such as homes and workspaces with eyes closed if need be. Baranov, for example, worked at Chernobyl for 10 years. Apparently he continued working there after too.

Humble people, I assume. Few survivors feel fine talking about it. Plus, they may have some health conditions they'd be uncomfortable talking about.

He knows. He's just wondering what would happen if you drop the demon core on the melted reactor 4 core. After the Ep1 a lot of people were posting about it in the threads, telling others how Americans also had nuclear fuckups.
