I don't recall earlier HBO series being such a cultural phenomenon. they were always seemed to have more obscure fan bases and stuff

Sex and the City

>I don't recall earlier HBO series being such a cultural phenomenon
That's cool, have fun at the prom.

Most people dont actually watch tv anymore, they just watch something that aired on tv later on the internet once they heard that it was good.

So yeah it probably is most peoples first HBO series

hello zoomer

The wire as a cultural phenomenon

The Sopranos literally had bigger ratings for most of its run

The Sopranos. The Wire. Curb Your Enthusiasm. Sex and the City. Girls. Oz. Band of Brothers. Flight of the Conchords. Tales from the Crypt.

The wire was shit

Holy shit OP, please grow up. HBO has been mainstream popular since the mid-90s

retard

None of those were incredibly popular, with the exception of the Sopranos that isn't even close to GOT. The Wire only became popular after its run.

GoT gets higher ratings for HBO than anything other than The Sopranos at its peak, with which it is basically tied.

I also think it gets pirated much, much more than The Sopranos, is far more popular internationally, and likely has a viewing demographic that skews much younger.

All but The Sopranos were niche, even if SatC had a larger niche than most of the others.

This. I'm glad its forgotten tho.

how the hell will they match game of thrones after it ends? No room for a sequel at this point.

They won't. They had this problem after The Sopranos went off the air where HBO had basically jack shit for five years, until Boardwalk Empire, which was a ratings disappointment

HBO wanted to do a prequel

Where I live none of them were popular as got
Except sopranos, sex and the city and band of brothers 90 percent of my friend never heard of
Most of them don't watch got also but they all know about it.
Never saw ads around the city for those shows but they are for got and some other . Everybody knows or watches got at work

I saw a couple of episodes from each season coz my gf was watching it from the beginning, and saw season 7 and 8 entirely, although I don't really understand whos who and why they love / hate eachother.

They'll do a spin-off or a prequel, but after that it'll peter out. Just like Marvel comics everyone is interested in the lore as long as someone makes Youtube videos about it, but once you start making movies or TV shows about the lore everyone gets bored and moves on.

I read the books, and I've read thousands of Marvel comics. People are into it when the next episode or movie is about to come about. There are tons of Youtube videos that give potential spoilers so they can discuss with their friends and act like they have better knowledge or are smarter than their friends by "predicting the outcome" based on already established material.

Was a spin offever done before?
For example spin-off just season 5-8 that Yea Forums say are shit?
Will they do it from the start?

The rumors say they had more shots for each s8 episodes
Will it work let's say next year to air a different s8? The year after a different one?

HBO wanted to drag this shit out for a few more seasons, but everyone else was tired of doing it. This is why it felt rushed. It was always supposed to end this way, and they actually should have made a few more seasons about it. But they wrapped it up and everyone acted out of character and they're just going to end it like it should have ended.

HBO will do a spin-off, because everyone wants more. But it'll be with the B-actors and stories that no one actually cares about. They'll milk it like they should have milked the original show, and it'll fail. It's what's going to happen with the MCU. Star Wars somehow rejuvenated it. But once the last episode comes out everyone is going to get bored with it too.

The reason for this is because they've run out of source material. Everyone knows that shit sucks when you start making movies outside of source material.

With Star Wars there was tons of established material with stronk women that saved the day. The prequels were tolerated, because it fit with the lore. Now you're taking already established lore and erasing it to make movies. Shit sucks, no one has Youtube videos to watch where nerds break down what can happen next.

Game of Thrones. They ran out of source material but eventually the author was like "lol this is how it ends", and they had to redirect everything to fit that.

The MCU, you're cherry picking stories to make your own stories.

Sopranos was very popular. It's ending and final season was also universally shit upon (only for the hardcore fans to eventually like it/accept it).

Get ready for the narrative that HBO isn't good at ending their shows.

GoT doesn't even have that high ratings even though it seems like the whole world is watching it.

Based Piracy

It's more of an echo chamber effect. The Big Bang Theory is actually a much bigger show.

>I don't recall earlier HBO series being such a cultural phenomenon
The Chadpranos you zoomer

Yeah I know but still. You can't tell me that most people pirate that show. Most normies don't know how to pirate. They pay for these streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime.

GoT seems like the #1 show by far on social media and in pop culture.

None of the previous fanbases involved nerds.

I know one guy who has never watched a single episode of the show but "read the wikipedia page" and posts memes about it all the time.

So yes, many people aren't really even watching it.

>most normies dont know how to pirate
>type "[show name] (episode number) watch online" into google
>almost always comes up with a working video within the first few links

Now if you said normies dont know how to torrent sure, id believe you, but even my mother knows how to stream movies and tv shows for free

yes because YASS SSLAYYY normies turned it into harry potter for adults

The Sopranos and Sex and the City were both huge.
The other shows were just moderately popular.
The ending of the Sopranos was just as big a deal as GoT coming to a close, and the finale was getting the same type of response that this most recent GoT episode did as well.

don't forget that these guys have a trilogy of Star Wars movies to come up with from nothing, and that's the real reason why they're forcing this series to a close early
GoT got ruined for normies so D&D can get to work raping the rotted corpse of SW on schedule

>the wire
>the sopranos
you must be a zoomer
although game of thrones is bigger than those because of the 'nerd'/fantasy aspect
people got too into it as escapism, which got worse season 5 and onwards when the strong wamyn aspect got pushed too hard
first 4 GoT seasons are peak hbo though
i think rome is probably still my favourite hbo show, despite the rushed second season
who else has taken the redpullo?

Omar could probably take down at least one of those dragons. How much drug money does the dragon have on him?

>Game of Thrones
>ran out of source material
the worst part is that they had enough source material to make 7 seasons with 10 episodes each (roughly)
but they rushed through 3 books worth of story in season 5 (idk why, would be cool if someone has an answer) instead of doing roughly 1 book per season like in seasons 1-4
they only ran out of source material as quickly as they did because they started to squander the material, it's their own fault that they needed to make shit up
maybe not catching up to the books until 2017 would have given grrm the extra push to finish winds of winter more quickly
the show could've taken some hiatuses to wait for the books if they hadn't rushed so far ahead

Only the more tech-savvy people. Most normies I know have already trouble with googling stuff.
The reason why everything is so dumbed down nowadays is because of normies too plus boomers. Windows 10 and iPhones were made for normies and boomers.

>type in on google "watch game of thrones online"
>literally the first result has every episode including the newest
Granted its an advertising aids infested website trying to trick you into downloading a virus but the videos work

I think you're serverly underestimating the average person if you think they cant google "watch game of thrones online"

>people got too into it as escapism

They got into it because it was popular and thought they were being original by watching something millions of other people watch. Goys gonna goy, keep that in mind.

What a retarded zoomer post. Holy shit. kys OP

It was because of escapism. Learn the definition and you will understand.
