Varys always planned to smuggle him out. By snitching he made himself less suspicious and also he wanted Tyrrion to go to Essos to help Dany, if he is found not guilty he will stay in KL.

I like Tywin more than Tyrion, but from Tyrion's point of view, he was completely justified in killing someone who condemned him to die for a crime he didn't commit.
