They held their own only until America decided to attack them.
Their codes were broken within months (if they hadn't already been at the onset of the war, I can't quite remember) and they pinned down the Japanese fleets separated from each other and destroyed them all, giving America full naval superiority.
On the mainland though, it is true that the Japanese could cause great casualties on the Americans.
I must admit I'm not as familiar with the pacific theater as with the European one, but there's only so much you can do when you need to defend islands with no naval presence.
