In terms of how long it was on the air, it was the right number of seasons.
BUT because they were following the half-completed book plot long after the first arc of the books ended (the red wedding), seasons 4 and 5 are far too meandering for them to have been on a solid footing to move off in their own direction, if indeed they were capable or permitted to invent condensed or divergent storylines from the main plot.
About the only plot they had left that was even tangentially related to the books was the army of the dead, and well look what they did with that.
We're at the stage now where there's no plot, it's just children bashing their toys together and making them fight because they're the ones they have.

How I understand the whole thing:

Ever since born, she was promised a throne and to be a ruler, for the first 16 years of her life everything was given to her. Dragons, men, cities to rule, ships, trusty advisors. She sailed to Westeros to claim the promised throne and in the process of doing so, she started losing dragons, men, anything to rule over, her ships and her advisors started plotting against her.

She fell in love with a guy, who turned out ot have a better claim to what was promised to her, then in her eyes, he failed to keep a secret, thus betraying her. The particular outburst and the burning of the city was her way of acting out on people turning their back on her, until the very moment they were easily defeated. If they were to surrender within 10 minutes of the battle and save their lives, then missisipi lady and the dragon died for no reason. She was being vengeful and acting on the loss of her closest loved ones.

I agree user. It's trendy right now to be anti-got, but the criticisms, which were legit for the last two episodes, ring hollow for episode 5. In some cases, they're contradictory. E.g. Before: people complained about homing balistas. Now: people complain that they don't home. Just feels like bandwagoning. Episode 5 is still better than any other show, even if poor compared to S1-S4.
