Between losing his hand, the death of his father and meeting Brienne he was confronted with obstacles that he had never faced before. The only comparable moment in his characters history was shanking the mad king and wearing the kingslayer label. You can argue he always had the good in him, but the point is they finished his character nicely. He never could entirely dismiss his feelings for Cersei, no matter how much he matured as a man he was still just a man.
