I think the issue is much more how the show frames it. When she killed mostly innocent people before the show always tried to pretend it was epic and badass (which is why she was such an unlikable bitch to me) but in this season they're turning on their heels and showing her to suddenly be a tragic but viscious tyrant and the two portrayals completely conflict.
