I thought the roasting of Varys got the demonic nature of dragons across like nothing I've ever seen.

The unrelenting destruction of this war is absolutely necessary to pose the question of whether Dany's power struggle is worth this, to which of course the answer is no. That works as a great conclusion to Dany's story, where her struggle between wanting unadulterated power and wanting to look after her subjects is tugged and the side she neglects suffers. The destruction of King's Landing and the focus on how war ruins lives also just felt incredibly GRRM-esque and I'm fully convinced this will happen in the books and be just as chaotic.

The problem is they could've achieved this without turning Dany into a deranged psychopath, and instead had the destruction of the city be mostly collateral. The writers couldn't come up with a way to do that, so instead Dany takes a massive detour on her way to the Red Keep and goes burning innocents for no reason whatsoever, and the Unsullied and Dothraki go on an equally stupid rampage of their own. I highly doubt George will do this part. I think it's likely Dany will destroy the Red Keep and Lannister troops believing she's justified, but I think the chaos brought on civilians will be collateral.

Yeah, Dany could have crossed the sea and taken Kings Landing quite easily at any point after her dragons became fully grown. This is what I suspected from season one, that they would drag out her plotline because as soon as she reaches Kings Landing it's over. Why did dragonfire blow up the buildings. It's just fire, it would burn them and set them on fire not blow them up. When Aegon took Harrenhal with his way bigger dragon he burned the towers, they set on fire and the stone started to melt. Harren and his sons were burned. The melting stone warped and may have led to collapse of some towers but the whole towers didn't just explode.

The battle would have been better if Dany had basically no army left, instead of another fresh batch of Unsullied and Dothraki out of nowhere. If the situation on the ground was hopeless except for her using Drogon over and over to hold off Cersei's forces it would make sense how she had to keep escalating her use of dragonfire. But here instead after she blows up the gate and oneshots the Golden Company the ground battle is basically over, and her then doing her dragon attacks feels like insane overkill.
