Author of the books is salty because asked for 2g instead of royalties on the games even when CDPR tried offering a hefty percentage sales.

It tanks the show, but it launches the writer/director into massive popularity. They get to go on talk shows, take interviews etc talking about their work and how the evil (Bad People) you can fill in the parenthesis with whatever bad buzzword you want, incels, nazis, gamergaters, misogynists, who cares. And claim their horrible insensitivy is what REALLY tanked the show. So that writer gets to be a celebrity and rakes in money and fame for their efforts. Then they get all the career opportunities in the world. Every studio everywhere wants them. Partially due to that level of mainstream popularity, and partially due to their politics makes them an amazing choice for the studio to make claims of being progressive and forward too just for hiring X writer.

All it really takes is intentionally tanking an already dead series for Netflix or Starz. It's kind of selfish, since the product is bad, fans are insulted, and the franchise might die because of it. But that one person gets to be a media darling for a few weeks and make a shitload of sympathy politics money.

It's the new way of playing the system for individual benefit.
