The movie cuts out a huge portion of things. In the book Ellie has a relationship with Derheer, someone that's not even really mentioned in the movie at all but is very important to the entire project. Also, in the book 5 people go on the trip, not just Ellie, so again, huge chunks of the material cut out.
The ending is basically the same however: all 5 report they had experiences - individually even though they traveled together - meeting someone in their pasts, either family or friend, and discussing things for a short period of time, then they returned with no proof that anything happened at all.
Except that 18 hours of static, mind you.
The movie is acceptable but the actual novel is vastly superior.

The beginning was good until the Hitler scene.
Then the ending was also good especially when James Woods was yelling in the court room.
In between it is kinda shit. That 90's kind of shitty scifi for average people.
