What's the best technique for creating this kind of shot where blood splatters on the camera? I'm recreating it in my film but we were not equipped to do it properly on set.
All blood splatter discussion relevant.

Haha we don't know anything about making flicks, we just shitpost about capekino here friend
Film a pane of glass and splatter blood on it.
Use your brain.
Glass pane in front of camera + blood spray
I spend a fair bit of time here too, my dude. I do make films though and I just thought I'd try my luck cause I'm pretty out of luck.
Just throw fake blood all over your expensive camera. People will appreciate your dedication to the craft.
We tried that on set but due to a scheduling mistake from the producer we weren't equipped to do it correctly. We didn't have anything to do the splatter with on the shoot. Otherwise I would have done it with blood in a spray container.
I am 100% sure it will look absolutely cheesy no matter how "good" you execute it and I would rather stay away from it and focus on the narrative, not gimmicky things like this.
Just throw a bunch of ketchup around infant of a nice green screen and add it to your film.
Unless it looks like shit
*in front of not infant
My film is a Stephen Chow style comedy. It's supposed to be a bit cheesy.
See
So just do it again when you have all the shit?
it's a shit effect anyway, you're better off without it.
Depending on your scene you can replace it with a cut to a close-up or some suggesting insert
I don't have the time. Submission is in a few weeks and I still have more to film elsewhere.
I quite like it and want to reference the film though the shot.
Though, I do like the idea of doing a close up after. Maybe to some beaten meat.
Cringe
There's a fuckload of readymade cheap blood splatter green screen footage for you to just insert, stuff like videocopilot action essential and such. youtube.com
Yeah it looks absurdly cheesy when in focus, but you'll throw a fuckload of blur on it regardless because it isn't even supposed to be in focus in the first place.
The key is to be as subtle as possible with it, put as little as possible. Look at a film like Children of Men and how it's executed there.
But if it's supposed to be a legit full on blood dump at the camera you have no other choice but to film it for real.
Unless you're filming a music video or something, blood splatter is a terrible effect.
The camera is a non existent observer. It shouldn't interact with anything around it.
To answer your question, I imagine that you can get decent result with VFX.
Alright, that I can work with. I'll look into doing it that way. It's just for a quick shot that serves as a Takeshi Miike reference. I love his style. I plan to keep the blood out of focus anyway but good point made. Thanks my dude.
I think it depends on the film. It's technically a 4th wall breaking technique and can be used well such as in Yakuza Apocalypse.
Blood splatter should only be used if it's from a 1st person perspective
>Look at a film like Children of Men and how it's executed there.
Its used there because the whole movie was shot with hand held in that documentary style to put you in the situation.
Generally you don't want anything breaking that 4th wall unless you have a good reason for doing so.
It's used there because there was literally fx blood that splashed on the lens and they had to remove parts of it with cgi afterwards cause splatter was too big. They had to go through all this cause that was 1 take scene and they already started filming and couldnt stop.
