Hmm, that's a helpful comparison, but I think Alita is a lot deeper than I, Robot. There are striking visual representations of personal integrity in Alita that you don't get anywhere else. She manages to keep herself together while literally being torn apart. It left a powerful impression on me and not a day will go by that I don't think about it.

Let's face it, the writing in Alita: Battle Angel (2019) is incredibly shallow. Each character reads like a cliche, each somehow more caricatural than the previous. There's the naive and rebellious heroine, the nice but forgettable love interest, the stern but caring father figure, the rich and white (obviously) man, etc. Dig a little deeper and there's not much beneath the surface.
What do we even know about the main character, Alita? Well not very much, all things considered. What are her hobbies? What is her favorite anime? What is her dream? What is her greatest fear? Who knows. This is never expanded on or implied and Cameron probably never thought about it. Just like Rei from Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995), it is clear Alita is nothing but a blank canvas for the viewer to project their sick fetishes upon, an afterthought of a character meant to look cute and sell merch and nothing more.
