So, USUALLY, anything that is "old" and still considered has to be good, because all the crap has forgotten about and filtered out. But new things could be good or bad; it's hard to tell. Sometimes things are overblown with hype and phony accolades, usually for reasons of money. There are many examples where something was the hot awesome shit at one point that everyone (or most people) agreed upon was good, but everyone either wakes up suddenly or realizes after sometime it was not as good as they thought or actually shit all along. It's fragmented in many smaller groups each taking their turn to fuel the threads until the bigger groups like the /soc/ one takes over at night, perhaps a necessary evil, or perhaps a crutch to prop up a general desperate to welcome any new blood because there's only so much you can discuss about the same 2h movie and every bit of extra material for 150k posts.
That this resident tralled called Jerome (not me) has been able to consistently bait people day in and day out since the early threads is proof enough. Do you think his gimmick would be possible in a more closely kept community found in other generals from other boards? He wouldn't even have been given the badge of honor of a name, be told to lurk more or ignored, got bored after a day and left.
Modern Yea Forums cannot in its best days be a secret club though, Yea Forums least of all, that's not the point. Digital distribution is cheaper than having invetories of unsold CDs, so profitability might be better now than it was in the years immediately after Napster.
