That's true, but the important fact you're missing is that graphite can absorb absorb neutrons, which is a very rare property for materials, other than graphite the only other substance used for the same purpose in nuclear reactors is 'heavy water'. The graphite absorbs the neutrons that the uranium fuel fires off so they stick around longer and generate more heat. It's specifically a 'graphite neutron moderator', basically a radiation battery.

The creator at least did his best to remain accurate, there is an official podcast that goes with each episode. He says what is real versus what is modified for narrative (like the guy from The Terror actually had a family, he wasn't a loner like he shows).
