The movie borrows basic plot from the game. Kid's Dad is missing, Pikachu finds the son to find his DAd.

They had to have an excuse to turn pikachu back into Ryan Reynolds. at least the game had the balls to basically make it clear that Pikachu gave up his life for Harry. and there was no way Harry would come back because his body was dead.
so he never tells Tim it's him and the game ends with them still looking for Tim's dad.
though coming to think of it, Pikachu knowing he is Tim's dad and never telling him so he continues searching is extremely fucked up.
I'd have settled for pikachu couldn't be turned back to human. because Reynolds's body was dead.
at least give some weight to the movie. literally nobody died, the stakes here were almost as low as Avenger's Endgame.
