reminder that touching a radioactive object will not make your skin melt within minutes

I NEED WATER IN MY REACTOR COOORE

It's beautiful.

Attached: 1498694111922.jpg (900x1200, 162K)

How do I get daddy to watch kinobyl with me?

If it's radioactive enough, there's no limit to how quickly it'll melt you.

>implying there was any radioactivity involved
heat will do that to your skin

Attached: 1532841118864.png (420x420, 288K)

Fuck off tripfag

false. it will take days before any real physical damage occurs

the rock wasnt hot. also, plently of people in the first episode got open wounds all over their bodies from the radiation.

I finally watched it. I liked how understated the soundtrack was. It really blended well with everything else that was going on on screen and felt like a natural part of the background, it didnt draw too much attention to itself but still was able the amp up the intensity of scenes when it needed to. It works especially well with the nature of the radiation amd the way in which its treat is presented to us.
The bit with the slow pulsing noise that happens when the onlookers play in the ash which i think cuts to a guy heading to one of the more dangerous areas made my stomach turn

>false. it will take days before any real physical damage occurs
Lmao what? Where is this coming from?

Attached: 1548905454310.png (318x266, 57K)

kinda surprised not many people died from the Chernobyl disaster.

It was only like 31 people.

>false. it will take days before any real physical damage occurs

Attached: brainlet.png (1066x600, 276K)

31 people from 3.6R/h? Sounds about right.

The rest only died 20-30 years earlier than they should have.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acute_radiation_syndrome

check it out yourself. radiation wont make wounds appear as fast as they show on the telly

just had food arrive. was gonna watch the twilight zone. but see thread son this and i have hbogo open. should i watch?

Uhh, whatever you say dude.

THE CORE IS FUCKED YOU GUYS

Attached: _.jpg (510x510, 24K)

No one died, you're delusional.

Attached: 32273.jpg (394x401, 38K)

it's a critical mass core you dimwit. it's so hot the water cooling it isn't cool enough. it could sink through the fucking crust of the earth. begone idiot.

funny IRL anecdote
>be me
>live kinda near a closed uranium mine
>sometimes extreme tourist go there
>one day a guy kicking rock in the area discover a kinda shinny rock, he tought it was neat
>put it into his package and go to the city
>the glowing was better at night, guy proud of his nice rock, sleep with it in his room a few nights
>he eventually show it to a geologist friend
>"what was this from again?"
>"los gigantes mine dude, i bet ur jelly dude"
>man open his eyes as big as an anime character
>stop up and almost throw away the table
>he scream, that shinny rock was a rock with noticeable traces of U-235 enought to produce a mild glowing
>rock owner got desesperate realizing how much he fucked up
>geologist eventually calm down and decide the best thing was throwing it in a lake and tell no one
>they did it
>rock owner (still) haven't cancer
>nobody was oficially aware how much a uranium rock contaminated the city

when you think dumb people can't fuck it up again they always found a way

Attached: 1557525583390.png (722x349, 264K)

i got btfo by some nerd who did research a few threads ago
turns out the maximum radioactivity of a piece of core material was only around 1/5th of the radioactivity required for (near) instant wounds

Not the kind of show to watch while eating if you're squeamish. What food btw

How does radiation damage you exactly? Its particles shooting through you right? How do symptoms stick around and slowly kill?

>should i watch?
It is unequivocally the best TV show made within the past 5 years so, nah, you can skip it.

Such a thing had never happened before in our modern history. That’s why it’s more than just a mere explosion or accident

what the fuck are you talking about. he picked it up like it was nothing. it was implied that it was so radioactive it fucked his hand up

didn't some people get instant wounds?

It's like being struck by lightning, but more insidious. The particles are mostly photons, specifically gamma rays, which have enough energy to shake apart the molecules in your cells. Your body has no insulation for gamma rays, so you develop burns inside and out.

different radiation does different things, alpha doesnt penetrate skin (but causes terrible damage if ingested, which a lot of the liquidators inadvertently did) beta has shallow penetration which causes sunburn like symptoms, gamma punches right though and damages cells on a molecular level

Kino post

>this glowing rock from the uranium mine is really cool!

your dna is constantly replenishing/repairing it's cells, making little machines called proteins to do this, also just operating in general

imagine if the instructions that tell it how to do this are destroyed

Can I touch it?

I would love to see a source for that, and the methodology by which it was determined.

yeah, aparently the low iq guy didn't make the mental connection between a shinny rock and a uranium mine

cell = building with construction/renovation
dna = blueprints
proteins = construction equipment
radiation = blasting blueprints and construction equipment with explosives and machine guns

Fuck why is /kinobyl/ so comfy senpai?

It's comfy when we stick to STEM and the show.

Oh shut the fuck up you stupid tripfag.
Face it, the Soviet Union massively fucked up when handling Chernobyl and it was a glaring sign that their country was nearing the end of their death spiral.

Wasn’t her husband part of the fire department that was at Chernobyl? Or am I thinking of a different character.

To be fair most decent doctors in the USSR at the time either already died with Stalin or were doing PR shit in South America.

You're thinking of the redhead from the commie-block

im confused about this too

Fireman's wife is the pregnant lady with curly hair.

there is slavmommy and iodine qt

Attached: noble gib slavmommy.png (1328x1450, 1.43M)

Not the nurse - the old lady who works with Stellan.

I've said before, it's gonna be bad, but it was likely included to balance out what happens to the other female MC.

Attached: worry.png (224x309, 58K)

I was actually talking about the doctor not knowing iodine pills were for radiation while the female nurse obviously knew

Nah having actors who could do the accents or even better speak the language would make it even more kink. This is a historical drama. Imagine if they did a Hitler drama and they did it in British. Same thing.

Cherenkov radiation, some kind of light emitted from charged particles coming off reactors, I don't know the details but I'm pretty sure its exaggerated for the show

Attached: vlcsnap-2019-05-07-17h59m55s570.png (1280x640, 538K)

Cherenkov radiation would never last that long/far outside the reactor

No. A handful of raw uranium ore has about as much radiation as 10 bananas.

there is no tripfag here, you're delusional comrade

I feel my cells fear everytime i look at this

Radiation in the form of photons knocks electrons out of the air. This electron-knocking is the same mechanism by which lightning becomes visible.

no, it was ironization of the air. the radiation was so intense at the burning core that it was literally tearing air molecules apart. cherenkov really IS mild.

fake news
uranium ore extracted from the ground would never be anywhere close to this potent

GET WATER INTO IT

so geologist in fake story was being a retard like i thought

radiation fucks up your DNA. Our cells are programmed to reconstruct ourselves and keep us together, when radiation is involved it deprograms the cells and they no longer know what the fuck is a human and start destroying you from the inside out.

1) Why did it explode?
2) Why can't it explode?
3) What's the Feedwater? A term they used a lot in the episode but I didn't quite get what the fuck were they talking about.

example
>dude starts vomiting
>"oh, its the feedwater don't worry about it, send him to the infirmary"
What's the feedwater?

nigger we just need you to tell everyone how safe our reactor is and there's nothing to be worried about
capiche?

ive done this with my farts before user

All is ok, nothing to see here.

>It destroys the fuckin atoms
It makes electrons do crazy shit, but the atoms remain mostly intact. Molecules get fucked up.

He’s fine user, I’ve seen worse

I torrented the episode and got a copyright email before it was even done downloading tonight lol

God bless the USA

its the water they eat obviously you brainlet

water that feeds.

Why do you ask the same questions every time? Learn how to google something.

AT&T?

The water that passes through the core I assume, they thought the tanks exploded so a bunch of radioactive water was spraying everywhere

Kappa
Don't fuck with HBO

Finally finished the first episode. Damn this was kino and interesting too. I really fucking like that we can have really good threads about a kino show and learn something at the same time. I want go visit pripyat now.

Count the superheroes, trannies, talking apes, and examples of good government you see in this show.

sneed

too much power somehow got diverted into reactor 4 and it exploded (water was sublimated into hydrogen) the core then went into uncontrollable fission (meltdown)
it can
the water they use to cool the core and generate steam to turn the turbines, they incorrectly assume the tank which cycles water exploded rather than the core itself

the water pumped in from the pripyat river to cool the reactor. NPPs need a constant source of cool water to cool the core down thats why they are always on rivers/lakes/the ocean

Why did the Captain Whiskey kill himself at the beginning? Everything about Chernobyl is well-documented and the highest positioned nuclear plant people were sentenced; lightly, but sentenced nonetheless. What did he expect, that Gorbachev will resign?

This. Wait until the expanse starts up again. We'll be in full Jared Harris posting mode by then

Comcast operates outside the US? But no Midwest born and (corn and fat) raised

Attached: 1555883898499.jpg (817x460, 90K)

The issue is that the amount of radiation needed to cause instantaneous third/fourth degree burns through a glove would've turbo-fucked everyone nearby within minutes anyways, AND it would've been immediately felt. There's no scenario where the dude picks up a chunk of radioactive material, holds it for several seconds, puts it down, and then a few minutes later has his hand falling apart.

He “suicide” was a huge fucking deal in the Soviet Union

Tbh the only shows I'm watching right now are this and the other complete meltdown that is GoT so I'll risk it

So what would've happened if those guys turning the water on never did that? Assuming that was authentic.

Anatoly Dyatlov

This last season has given more people cancer than Chernobyl ever will.

I left for a few hours and come back to see you still shitting up Chernobyl threads. Are you okay?

Probably, but
an user in another thread explained why. I almost don't even want to type it out since it makes for such a dramatic twist.

After everything settles down, he turns on the Russian population and helps the government cover up the incident. He's exposed and his life is ruined, so he khs.

Obviously the show is taking some creative liberties.

CUT THE PHONE LINES

It is a TV show and it's only five episodes and to tell a story several women characters are condensed into one. I doubt this show will be full sjw. I'm giving it a chance.

How can you be sure? Got any numbers?

How does an RBMK reactor explode, Yea Forums?

LENIN WOULD HAVE DONE THE SAME, TRUST ME GUYS

THE WORLD CANNOT KNOW THAT SOVIET FEEDTANKS ARE FAULTY COMRADE, WE MUST PROTECTS THE FRUITS OF FEEDTANK MANUFACTUR'S LABOR

My friend which grew up in the USSR thought this was the dumbest line in the episode. Of all the things, the phone lines line...

Are you stupid, comrade? They can’t explode

Who here wanna visit Pripyat now? I live in Europe so wouldn't be that difficult to go there. Probably expensive though.

It's SNEEDWATER

RBMK STRONK!

>they tried russian accents but actors focused on that instead of acting so they decided to ditch it
good, fake Russian accents veer wildly between bad and comedic, neither of which you want in a show like this
>didn't include some plant workers and combined some figures together
minor characters being composited/omitted from a short series? you don't say!

I'm complaining about him.
>it was nothing like this at ALL I SWEAR FRIEND
>yeah, ok

>we will see many flashback of scenes leading up to the explosion from different POVs

KINO

I know it's reddit but interesting nonetheless.

reddit.com/r/television/comments/bmuzxg/mistakes_in_the_tvseries_chernobyl/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

This.

I'm taking the liberty to assume feeding the hole with more water is a mistake, right?

toppest kino. you could see every irradiated pore on his face

They said, "There's nothing there." They went to their deaths to pump water into a ditch.

these sound like very trivial nitpicks for the most part, which means the show has been very diligent about getting things right

it's not that adding water will make things worse, it probably just won't do anything at all

>The KGB monitors Legasov at night. Exaggeration. In 1988, the KGB was no longer up to Legasov. In the USSR, destructive processes began, which then led to the disintegration of the country, so nobody would be engaged in round-the-clock surveillance of some scientist who could write something in his memoirs. During the perestroika in the newspapers of those times it was already possible to write anything, including about Chernobyl.

this was explained in the podcast - Legasov's tapes went public IRL but nobody knew how they were leaked, so they invented a subplot about someone (the agent) finding his tapes

rarbg.to/torrents.php?search=chernobyl

Which one of these is the fun police NOT currently monitoring?

>1) Why did it explode?

* Test to see if latent steam in turbines could power water pumps in the 45s gap between grid power loss and diesel generator takeover.
* The test required a specific power output.
* They were supposed to power down the reactor to test levels slowly.
* Electrical grid needed power so they kept it running high, then dropped it fast to stay on schedule.
* The result was Xenon poisoning and the power output dropped way too low.
* Rather than abort the test they disabled safeties and pulled nearly all the control rods.
* RBMK reactors have a positive coefficient of reactivity. This means water coolant is a control and as water is lost reactivity increases.
* They cut grid power to the pumps.
* Water pumps spinning but slowing down.
* Steam voids forming in core as water flow decreases.
* Feedback loop: Reactivity increases > Xenon burn and more steam > reactivity increases.
* Somebody scrams the reactor.
* RBMK reactors have graphite tips on the control rods. Graphite is a moderator. So when you scram a RBMK reactor until the control rods are in place there's actually a spike in reactivity.
* There's enough heat to deform the control rod channels so they stop 1/3rd of the way.
* Xenon burned off, there's nothing but steam in the core, and graphite is stuck a third of the way in = literal fission bomb.
* There were two explosions. Evidence indicates that one was literally a fissile event. The core blew itself apart, blew the top biological shield off, and once oxygen rushed in anything that could burn did burn.

>2) Why can't it explode?
It can.

>3) What's the Feedwater? A term they used a lot in the episode but I didn't quite get what the fuck were they talking about.
Coolant water that's contaminated because it circulates around a fucking nuclear reactor core.

Literally just needs some water

>tfw we get to see what happens to Khodemchuk

Explain how a RBMK reactor explodes you fucking retard, I swear to God half the people on this board are braindead delusional mental imps

Nothing. Their deaths were meaningless. They were pumping water into a ditch, like mustache said.

Sounds like capitalist lies to me

just watched it and ended reading the entire wiki page. that old man is evil.

not squeamish, in med school. chicken with garlic sauce and rice.

just look at the stars, retard

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster#Experiment_and_explosion

ok but did you lower the contol rods or not?

Dyatlov did nothing wrong, it was the KGB for holding back critical information about RBMK reactors

But water is a good shield against radiation right? So could you in theory have a suit that was surrounded by water and stand near a radioactive source and not get hit much?

I can't wait to see The Elephant's Foot in 4k, also to watch the guy in a radioactive gear still die by radiation after looking at it.

I don't know what the suit's for, but you might need a lot of water.

>being this much of a delusional comrade
to the roof user

>tfw im an undergrad doing a physics degree and ive literally published papers on nuclear physics but I still dont understand enough to know whether some of the anons itt are talking out of their ass

I don't know why people in this thread are assuming that something that cannot explode, actually exploded. Doesn't make much sense to me.

This show brings out the best of "I was only pretending to be retarded" posting. Thank you user I had a laugh.

That's what I thought, to the roof with you!

I didn't even finish college and I can tell. You're losing it, comrade.

No...I won't do it.

No, see, that's where they all went wrong. Reactors don't want water. Reactors need Brawndo. It has what reactors crave.

I can make things a lot worse for you user. Now get to the roof and tell me what you see.

lol fucking based dyatlov

Of course you will.

I WILL SLUT!

Is Pewdiepie sponsored by Brawndo?

Are they stupid?

He was fucking great.
Absolutely nailed his role.

I bought a new car today, comrades
Ask me anything

>undergrad
>published papers

So you did your dissertation and got yourself published in the uni library? Nice.

No I mean say a magical suit that had water around it. Or say u were in the bottom of a pool next to the reactor. How deep does the pool need to be in order for the radiation to lot affect you? It's almost 7 in the morning and I'm tired so I'm very stupid atm.

Our great advances in technology allow our citizens to tan even on the most overcast days! FUCK capitalism!

>tfw have to call Scherbina

We would like to prevent the spread of this misinformation.

that's quite significant

YOU SHIT, THE CORE IS FUCKING *GONE*, WATER'S NOT GONNA DO A BLOODY THING NOW YOU WANKER

You're getting confused with star wars m8

space.stackexchange.com/questions/1336/what-thickness-depth-of-water-would-be-required-to-provide-radiation-shielding-i

tl;dr - 7cm of water cuts radiation level in half. (Gamma rays since Alpha won't penetrate paper and Beta won't get far in water.) You need 2.5m to reduce fuel rod radiation to sub natural background radiation levels.

>feelio when you're trying to get water in your into your reactor but all your comrades are delusional or in the infirmary and then some dayshifter says he saw graphite.

To make sure that none of the zoomers and millennials forget that nuclear is super scary while they continue the push for fossil fuel alternatives.

Aside from the typo, he's right, isn't he?

>literally missing the entire point of the show

>You deserve a meaningless form letter.
it's not meaningless. i got internet shut off for a week once. next time it's off for good. been torrenting for a decade at this address, so they eventually got me.

used a vpn for the last 2 years but it apparently shut off for a second long enough for my isp to detect it. fucking sucks.

Are you seeding?

Thanks. This was interesting. I can't be bothered looking uo that lord of the rings Eagles photo, but why don't they build the reactor inside a huge squared room, that in case of an accident can be filled with water.

Filling it with water just means contaminating something that can leak out. Every reactor needs a concrete dome like most western reactors have. Three Mile Island was a nothingburger precisely because the dome contained everything except a minor leak through a ventilation system.

That's interesting. Thanks for actually answering my dumb question in a good way. Based user.

no i shut it off right after it downloads like a true leecher. it was just chance. i torrent very rarely now, turn on the vpn killswitch, and closely monitor it from beginning to end.

Did he do anything wrong?

chernobyl babies

You're welcome. And it wasn't a dumb question. We use pools to safely store spent rods so it's natural to wonder if that could work for the core itself.

And it would except when something has gone wrong you can expect fission products and damage that can lead to leaking. Which is why concrete works better there.

chill sweetie
