FUCK i'm feeling strong urges to play stalker SoC again
I'm terribly sorry comrade, have you tried asking nicely?
Chernobyl didnt happen, its a worldwide conspiracy propped by the CIA to undermine socialism, there was never any radiation
>"Please daddy watch this show with me?"
I know what you want, you sick fuck.
qt

radiation is a myth
how's the view from the infirmary window comrade?
Are nuclear bombs real or not? I need answers.
>IMPOSSIBLE!
daddy was fighting the nuclear fires.
RMBK can't explode, Chernobyl was an inside job
well you can't see it so its obviously fake

correct sir
Hasn't uploaded a vid in over a year.
Found the actual recording of the fire department call the night of the disaster. Besides a few parts being left out and a bit of wording, it's pretty damn accurate. Text is the same though, so it could've been a translation error: youtube.com
i saw a guy on /x/ once a while back who legitimately tried to convince us that nukes werent real
how expensive is a tour around chernobyl and pripyat?
Hod do you go from this to this???

It's more common than you think.
Can someone tell me what the fast moving dark swaths are supposed to be in the mandatory core gazing scene? At first I was thinking it was just smoke but it looks like it's moving too fast and dissipating not enough for being smoke. Water evaporating into steam could be another possibility but it seems like quite a lot of it, also i doubt that steam could carry so much ash to be colored this way. It it were just smoke, there would have to be a constant(!), sharp wind in a constant direction which seems unlikely.
Not being nitpicky, I seriously am confused by that scene.
nukes are real. They arent as world ending as they are made out to be. Eventaully they will be used every now and then.
just based on the fact that they were created by jews says it all really
How can nukes be real when atoms (probably) don't exist?
I don't know, how much does it cost to rent a car in Europe?

Embarrassing, back in the nuclear submarine base we huffed feed water all day like it was going out of style!
who was the feedwater guy irl? does anyone know his name?

Sweet, sweet.
But he didin't know how the reactor REALLY worked since that information was deemed classified.
So when he was running the test he was just working with the general understanding of nuclear reactors, he didin't know about:
-Positive reaction coefficency
-The formation of 'voids' when the water turned into water-vapor
-The differences in the reactors top and bottom part since most of the control rods were inserted from the top.
-The unintuitive way the reaction can actually speed up when adding more water or lowering control rods..
-and many many more quirks of the RBMK.
His superiors had told him to do the test, and that the reactor was 100% safe and could never explode, so that was the information he was working with.
oh shit
he knew it wasnt feedwater didnt he, that bastard, he knew all along
Plenty of nuclear in Europe to this day, friend. Maybe get your dosimeter fixed. The one in the safe.

>His superiors had told him to do the test, and that the reactor was 100% safe and could never explode, so that was the information he was working with.
No excuses. He did not handle the reactor as specified. 100% safe only means safe when operating as specified. No freewheeling shit.
Who even is that?

I'm so glad this show is getting laymen anons interested in the chemistry and physics of radiation. Yea Forums has proven itself to be a more reliable proponent of intellectualism than /sci/. I never thought I'd see the day.

Mostly threads about IQ, popsci news, flat-Earthism and other conspiracy theories, misinterpretations of the word "dimensions", constant threads denouncing the principles of mathematics (seriously), and threads about mathematics that are too high-level for me to even describe.
Don't go there.
basically this whole unit is the "core"
during the faulty experiment shit went sour and the nuclear fuel heat up in an instant causing the water to evaporate and tons of coating and top of the building were blown off while the nuclear fuel continued to burn in the reactor room melting through everything that was around and beneath the core unit resulting in a radioactive mass that is corium/elephant foot. it is what the two(in reality there were 3 guys looking) guys see when looking into the glowing abyss.
basically it is water heated up to steam that is connected to turbines to generate electric power and the accident itself is an exceptional steam explosion
>Yea Forums raves about show

What did he mean by this?
>tfw no nuclear plants in your country
Feels good man
To be fair, I knew your mother was a lousy fuck from the very first tumble.
Here's a more 3D view of that schematic. The core is basically a shit ton of graphite blocks with holes in them, and rods filled with fuel and control rods are stuck in the holes and water is pumped through the space between the blocks and the rods. The water heats up, goes to power a steam turbine, gets cooled down, circles round to the bottom and goes through the core again.

Oh okay. So those blocks on the top that he sees jumping in one of the early scenes are the top of the control rods when all the way inserted? Or are those fuel rods?
When they said lift the rods I figured there would be something physically lifting up in that room.

Norks do have ridiculous amounts of medals however.
Comrades, my panel isn't working.
>What exactly is the core?
Tub of nuclear fuel.
What's a biological shield? Russian serfs laid out like sardines?
I'm only guessing since I've not watched the show yet but from looking it up online it appears the drive mechanisms for the rods are built in, so you don't have a machine on top withdrawing or lowering them. There's a separate crane and machine for pulling rods out of the reactor entirely (ie. for refueling)
keep waiting until it does then
So /sci/ got /x/ed?
Did he try giving his baby vodka?
Remains of the nnocent Gulag prisoners killed by Stalin directly.
Ah okay. Interesting. Didn't think they were that big. Hard to get scale.
It's the term for the thing that shields biological things (animals, people, Russians, etc) from radiation. In this case a big bit of metal and concrete.
What kind of interface is this? Was this generated by someone or is it from some old Soviet 911 operator screen
the biological means its used to protect biological stuff that walks around it from radiation emitted from the core, humans ie.
the material itself is some kind of special concrete and/or steel
>Or are those fuel rods?
No. Those are graphite rods to slow down the reaction.
From what I can read, it's something that blocks radiation from escaping under normal operation. Like if you get an X-ray and the tech stands behind that lead wall.
Are the fuel rods intermixed though? From the side shots it seems like the fuel rods and control rods sit right next to eachother.
>тaтy
dropped
Rare pic from inside Sarcophagus.
lol what gulag
They seem intermixed, that's what i presumed the colour coding was on the reactor lid.
Where's the monolith?
Yes. The issue I have on /sci/ tends to be with anons not realizing that string theory involves a time dimension and 10-or-so *spatial* dimensions. They assume that another "dimension" is essentially another Universe, or a currently inaccessible portion of this Universe. The truth is highly unintuitive: Most of the time we deal with 3 spatial dimensions (length, width, height), but a popular version of string theory employs those 3 plus another 7 just like them. It's difficult, if not impossible, to grasp this idea non-theoretically - so idiots make nonsense threads where they fill in their ignorance with sci-fi concepts.
took you a while to show up this thread

I remember hearing about those, they're supposedly infinitesimally small. I have no idea how the hell a dimension can be small, or any "size" for that matter, but the whole concept does sound ballers.

nice. I was always fascinated by Pripyat as a kid, I got a geiger counter for my 11th birthday because of it kek
That really is an incredible trailer. I'm disappointed it didn't get more traction here when it was released.
absolutely nothing
you know the mary sue is going to fuck everything up.
I still don't get the disconnect of:

>but lets cut all the phone lines and seal the city
why not just be honest about it and say "lets just keep the panic under control by sealing off the city and cutting off information"?

Some user said that the interiors and everything looks sad and deppressing. Well, that might be true in comparision to western Europe let's say, but Pripyat was a very good place to live in the USSR compared to the rest of the country. You had all the facilities, hospitals, health care, entertainment, jobs and most of this shit for free.
why is his button bleeding? That's wax?
To turn off the reactor you just flip that switch?
just look at her and say you wouldnt call her mommy
Same for me with nukes and anything nuclear. Wanted to go to Pripyat and visit since I was 12. I live just South of Ukraine
Goes over the heads of many because of the subject matter. This is one of those topics where you can't use the expression "it's not rocket sciene!"
Honestly Leipzig Germany didn't look much better when I was there in the 00s.

His deal was to be an old guard KGB boogeyman stereotype implanted to ease digestion of the material by westies.
Yes it lowers the control rods, the wax is there to hold the cover of the button.
It fits with Chernobyl but some trailers overuse it for. When the two dudes are looking into the flaming reactor and the guy on the roof in E1 have an impeccable and chilling soundtrack.
This guy's face reminded me of Terry Davis
But this time niggers would literally glow in the dark

I guess so. Since they were all threaded through the biological shield they all got yanked out when the reactor exploded.
Isnt it almost like taking a trip to the zoo? Crowded as fuck?
I know loads of people that went and I'm from western europe
Less than you'd expect, but you still have to get there first.

More than before but not as many as some other tourist attractions methinks. But who knows?
Pic related is how they took care of them back in the day.
this photo looks 100% legit
it initiates a SCRAM, it's a bit more complicated that just "shutting it off" though
They could have filmed it on site like 'Zero Hour Disaster at Chernobyl' did.
strange, i thought the biggest spike would be around the 20 year anniversary, at least its when i first heard about it as an underaged fag.

no shit, we're talking about the descends of pets too. show me a 30+ year old dog or cat.
Either way, it's a shame though, basically it's become a radioactive Disneyland, imo it should be left alone, commercialising something as tragic as Chernobyl feels really wrong to me.
I am rewatching Rome right now, and there is just something about mature redheads in general that makes my dick diamonds.
stick to the topic retard and stop using that stupid phrase
Is it good? I was turned off by the English accents in show about an event that happened in the Soviet Union. Is it still worth watching?

It used to be about the STALKER challenge. You would go in at risk to your health with a Geiger counter into no-man's land against the wishes of Ukraine and nobody to show you where to go. You couldn't touch or stay near any building or any large vehicles because of lingering radiation. If you took pictures the government would know you were there and arrest you. It was a bad place to be, and those who went there loved it.
As the radiation has died off and Ukrainian government has kindly looked away from Pripyat and the revenue tourism generated this will only get worse until it's decided to either become a national forest / park and STALKERS once again must visit in shadow or become a fully fledged city.
The sarcophagus was replaced with something even bigger in 2016, designed to keep the core's lingering radiation in check until the early 22nd century. The "chimney"? Gone. Elephant's foot? Inaccessible. Wish granter? Nobody found it but it's in there somewhere.
Well, he was right that plant had design flaws, but I think he could have prevented disaster if he called off test earlier, at least that's the impression I got after watching few documentaries.
10 minutes into the official podcast they're already talking about Trump.
but there's graphite in the ground

>Wish granter? Nobody found it but it's in there somewhere.
I want the core to reappear
They were doing a safety test. The reactor relied on water pumps, but if they grid lost power then they needed almost a minute for the generators to start and the transfer switch to bring power to the water pumps, so they wanted to see if they could run the water pumps off of left over steam in the turbines. They first made a mistake when switching from manual to automatic control of the control rods, causing them to descend much farther into the core than intended. This resulted in an almost total shutdown of the reactor. Safety procedures required that the operators fully shutdown the reactor, as the RBMK became unstable at very low power. But the chief engineer insisted that they continue. Over the next hour, the men struggled to bring the reactor up to power, disabling safety systems in the process.
When the turbine was disconnected and began to coast down, the main circulating pumps began to cavitate and fill with steam, reducing the flow of cooling water and allowing steam voids (pockets of steam where there should be water) to form in the core. The absence of cooling water causes an exponential power increase. more steam = less water = more power = more heat = more steam. They then pressed the emergency shutdown button which lowered the control rods (but that causes a spike in power output at first before lowering again) the reactor’s energy output had soared to several times its intended capacity. Runaway heat and pressure deep inside the core ruptured fuel channels, then water pipes, causing the pumps’ automatic safety valves to close. This stopped the flow of coolant, increasing the rate at which steam was forming from the core’s diminishing water supply. The reactor’s own safety valves attempted to vent the steam, but the pressure was too great and they, too, ruptured. Finally a steam explosion blew the 450-ton upper biological shield clear off the reactor before it crashed back down on its side, leaving the core was exposed.

WHERE
The post about those guys being the only ones to ever look into a reactor is kind of wrong.
Research pool-type reactors like the kinds they have at several American universities allow you to look straight at the core.
>say something nice about her
But it's April, comrade
It's weird how so many people don't realize we're still basically running on watermills and steam engines
Where do these retards even come from? I mean every once and I while I've seen that on Yea Forums but lately it is every day.
just don't really want to hear about US politics in my tv show about Europe famalam
looks like a video game
great, like the episode
Always reminds me of how primitive we really are. All of this incredibly complicated machinery, eldritch fuel, and millions of man hours balanced on a knife's edge just to move around some steam.
Blurriness of picture reminds that early photos were fucked by radiation. Even today, inside of NPP camera footage gets white dots all over. Would be a cool affect for tv show.
pirating isnt stealing
isn't that dangerous?
why is it deep underwater, to keep it cool?

Anybody got a link to a stream or download?
informative
Fuck off retard.
I just went to google and typed "Tesla" to show his disdain for modern science but all I got was an ugly car.
Yeah humanity just keeps making them more efficient and complex.
that's how the energy is produced. nuclear power is just heating up water and making turbines spin
Maybe it refers to them being the only ones to look into what is left of the reactor while the fuel rods are on fire
Pool type reactors aren't powerful enough to generate electricity, and if they were then the water wouldn't protect you from its radiation
I hope there are some unofficial ones too with some smart people on it. Like some nuclear engineers or something.
but also yes, to keep it cool
it lost its soul
you'd think with their market cap they could hire a decent designer, but, maybe zoomers don't care
>straight at the core
It was a big deal because they were viewing it through the atmosphere. You're right; reactor cores can be viewed safely - but only through a thick lense.
It's not wrong, just a different type of reactor. If all of that water wasn't there, you'd be having a bad time too.
Fusion when?
>to keep it cool?
Yes, and also that amount of water between you and the core is what allows you to watch it without having your face melt, since water double up as a neutron shield in that specific design of reactor.
They got exposed to 3.6 rontgen, from contaminated feedwater
so, at the bottom a pool is okay?
wow no reason to be mean
so what do they do? seems pretty expensive for just a glowing pool
Oh, it may be worth noting that the atmosphere is mostly empty space. So at some point there was literally nothing standing between them from the core.
Produce radiation and a bit of heat. It is experimental and teaches people the principles of fission, reactor engineering...
No, you'd not want to get close to it. They'd shoot you before you get that close anyway.
They're for research and training, you can make modifications to it without disassembling it and examine it more easily
as it so happens boron is the only element that can absorb neutrons
Boron more or less is typically in standard borosilicate glass im assuming so there you go
>implying
Fusion is there to produce heat, same as fission.
If the pool is deep enough, sure. Water can absorb a fuckton of radiation. That's why Fukushima didn't get as much press; the radiation is limited to an area that can act as a sort-of container.
the banality of awe
it is expensive; only big rich schools can afford it
off the top of my head MIT and berkeley(or was it UCal?) are/were the only 2 uni's that housed their own nuclear reactors, although last i checked one of them shut down
either way they were reliable neutron sources so universities could send them samples for neutron diffraction analysis
a real fancy way to do compositional analysis if i recall
You sure? I've been under the impression hydrogen atoms work just fine.
Yeah, but idea is that fusion reactors would be powerful and safer.
i thought it was because fukushima was more or less right by the bay so if there was a massive spillage
the ocean is fucking massive and by virtue of sheer volume and the currents therefore you have effectively dissipated that shit
well if the hydrogen works, cool, but boron is relatively common element and it's not like borosilicate glass is like super rare/expensive
My school has one. It seems to be a shitbox one though:

>powerful
Definitely.
>safer
Probably not. We're gonna have to make some concessions if we ever want to get started on this. Keeping the world safe from a fusion reactor will present its own set of problems.
But there was a shot of her disposing radiated clothing and noticing the redness of her hands in the HBO Set preview.
Seeing how we still don't have an actual net-positive reactor, I'm not too sure about powerful even once they actually start producing energy.
Well, they at least they can't explode...
>the ocean is fucking massive and by virtue of sheer volume and the currents therefore you have effectively dissipated that shit
That is part of it. But being confined to the water also means the radiation can barely spread to inhabited areas. Water is DENSE compared to air. Real dense.
>boron is relatively common element
I meant hydrogen atoms in general - not pure hydrogen. So, water, basically.

Neither can an RBMK reactor tho
neither could an RMBK
but that didnt stop the water from popping
huzuh. She was only listed on the first ep on imdb but it seemed weird that they set her up so much if she just existed to look at stuff in one episode.
He'll die in the next episode, right?
RMBKs don't explode, ok?
>boils down
heh
>they can't explode
Little explosions are the source of heat energy. That's like saying a new oil rig can't catch on fire.
thanks friend
No, he'll live happily ever after
>to make fan go fast
What I find impressive is that we can use the fans to create electrical potential energy. I will never understand that shit. Magic.
nope, survives till 95
did you even watch the episode
Does the next episode have a 10 year time skip?
Oh, I thought the meme was only for fission reactors. My bad.
hell be fine
They showed scenes of all the 4 episodes, not just the next one.
AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH
>look it up
>it's true
Lucky guy
He just wasn't delusional
