No! This can't be happening!

thats a ptretty old pic, probs around 2.5-2.6 by now.

how did avatar do so much in the first place? was it mostly because it was one of the first big movies to utilize 3D glasses and shit?

no it's not
that's as of thursday

> still need $500mil
it's done, Iron Man couldn't do it

>not a single good movie in top 7

>50 MILLION SHORT

hahahahahahahaha sure marvelcuck...they'll get there

That’s literally the only reason. It wasn’t even an established franchise to bolster the sales either. I’m still surprised it has managed to be in the #1 spot for this long, especially in the age of Marvel and Star Wars

It was an "event" film, with cutting edge CG and also James Cameron's name in the trailer.

But much like movies with cutting-edge CG and no plot, it burned brighter and then vanished completely, like every Transformers movie.

There are four good ones up there. Guess which four I’m talking about.

how is this comment on every single thread that mentions Avatar?

big blue space cats

This chart makes more sense. The first 5 were downright cultural sensations that everyone who breathed had to catch at the theater.

And this was back when the global market was far more underdeveloped, no China to turbo boost your numbers.

>That’s literally the only reason.
You also forget the fact that it was in theaters for almost 10 months. Its premiere was only average, but it had very very strong legs. While most movies start out big and then steadily go down, Avatar sold a good amount of tickets for week after week. There was a big marketing budget behind it. Everyone talked about it.

Thank god for those 60k screens in China. Based Chinks putting Endgame on top.

Now subtract the money that movies like Titanic made on rerelease and it's more fair

>after a century of comics consisting characters that were based on ancient deities from ancient stories that spanned over a millennia ago
>after generation after generation of vidya, retcon, fan service, and all other kinds of marketing
>after billions upon billions of dollars spent on over 22 movies over the past decade
>after all the effort humanity put in leading up to this finale
>imagine... just imagine... it doesn't do it
>just imagine, that standalone film FROM said decade ago that began that cinematic challenge remains at the top
>imagine it doesn't break that 3 billion and become the top grossed movie in human history
>imagine, after ALL that, it STILL doesn't come out on top
just... imagine

oh wait

How does this inflation shit not completely bullshit.
In 1939 there weren't even 1000 screens and nowadays most countries have over 4000 screens.
How did it earn so much that in today's term it is equivalent to over $3 billion.

They charged double prices for the movie for the first year. Then they rereleased at regular prices in 1941. Then they rereleased it twice a decade through to the 1970's. It was a monster film. It was the #3 at the box office for the year of 1967, almost beating the jungle book.

I don't understand the anti-inflation dudes. 1 peso is worth less than one dollar, wouldn't the same rule apply to the same money from different eras having more/less purchasing power?

Gone with the wind was in theaters for years and people back then had nothing better to do than go to the cinema, they didn't have TVs

based

Why doesn't movie stats use tickets sold as opposed to money? Like, when video games get released, the stat is always units sold, not overall money made.

Using just money seems disingenuous since ticket prices have pretty much been increasing since the dawn of time, so of course movies have higher and higher box office numbers.

Are you suggesting that Inflation has nothing to do with profits?

Do you know how I can tell you're lying?

It will never get more thsn 2.6 bill SCREENCAP this. Cameron is king of all time until the earth is destroyed and no more movies will be made

because they're seething

i dont like capeshit much but ill take literally anything over avatar as top grossing, boring trash movie does not deserve that title at all

Where's the adjust for internet streaming, digital downloads?

I don't get why this shit matters to you. Both are brainless action movies. Both are definitely going to have sequels either way. It's like a pointless dick measuring contest, only it's other peoples dicks you are measuring.

If many people desire a movie then, by definition, it is good.

If a movie entertains lots of people (which is absolutely the required quality of a movie - at least it is for works of fiction) then, by definition, it is good.

The videogame industry is a recent spawn of nerds so they favour information that has actual meaning. The movie industry is a century and a half old order of Jewish producers who have rigged the game in as many ways as possible to hide, confuse and control the movement of money.

It still might. It will make over 800m domestically 100%. Most likely it will end doing 820-850m there. It will make another 630-640m in China. So that's 1450-1490m in just those two markets. It has already made 1075m overseas without China, so the big question is whether it can make 200-250m~ more? It's possible but even in best case scenario it will barely limp past Avatar. Even if it does beat Avatar's worldwide record of 2788m, it won't beat the other records held by The Force Awakens (936m domestically) and Avatar (2027m overseas).

I think it will be hard for Endgame to beat Avatar, yes. But there are a few reasons for this:

1. Most people went to see Avatar in 3D because it was hyped up as having this revolutionary new 3D shit (in retrospect it wasn't revolutionary at all). 3D tickets are more expensive than regular tickets, which is partly why Avatar's gross is higher than it should be.
2. Avatar was released in a sleepy December of 2009 and didn't have much competition, continuing throughout January and February of 2010. Remember that Avatar's opening was not exceptional at all: it ranks only 58th in opening weeks, and 96th in opening weekends (Endgame is 1st in both). The staying power over the weeks after it was released helped it gross so much, due to the lack of competition. Endgame, conversely, faces more stiff competition: Detective Pikachu, John Wick Chapter 3, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Dark Phoenix, and then Toy Story 4 a bit later on.

It's possible that Endgame could beat Avatar but it will be very difficult I think.

this

Jurassic World does NOT belong on this list. Neither do a couple other films, but especially Jurassic World.

then you'd have to adjust for population growth

They also need to adjust for gas prices

Tell me.

Inflation is the only way avatar wins, cause of 3D. When it comes to Ticket sales GwtW will be number 1, but avatar is already below about a dozen movies.

I think it will be hard for Endgame. It will have to do well against Detective Pikachu in order to stand a chance. I think it's unlikely Endgame will win to be honest. It will have to do very well.

Also I just thought of another factor which Avatar had in its favour - it was released around the Christmas holidays (December 18th, 2009). If you look at its takings from the final week of December (the week between Christmas Day and New Year's Day), it did much better during those weekdays than Endgame is currently doing this week (second week of release for both movies). This is because many people have the week between Christmas Day and New Year's Day off work, so they can take their kids to the cinema. Endgame does not have this benefit.

Based, I'll see it again after I'm done with my exams.

Good man. Maybe I'll go see it again. I would like it to beat Avatar. It's definitely a better movie. Although that's not really that hard, because Avatar is a pretty mediocre and notoriously derivative movie.

You're a fucking moron. It doesn't deserve it? It got people to go see it. This isn't a review of the films, this speaks nothing of the quality. It got butts in seats. It has nothing to do with who deserves it.

It took Avatar a month and a half to get where EG is today.

EG can easily surpass it in 3
