I don't really get that argument. Every anime drama is described by haters as forced and manipulative. Isn't the whole point that something bad happens and hits you in the feels and you kinda enjoy it? I would understand if people said they just don't like dramas, but they present it like there's some other way of going about that genre.

Not him, but you don't even need to leave 2016 to find better drama. By end of Katsumi you're gonna break out in tears not because of the sad circumstances, but because character development was done so incredibly well that the simple action of a character picking clothes for an adopted child emotionally stimulates the audience to almost euphoric level. Utilizing positive emotion to get an emotional response is an actual art. It shows the connection between the audience and the films characters. That's also by Kimi No Na Wa is hands down better than KnK. 9/10 dramas that build their emotional kickback on being "sad" are fucking terrible. KusoAnus flicks are the equivalent to Mexican Soap Opera.
