TV series aren't made to be good pieces of fiction. The name of the game in the USA at least is to shit out enough content to make the advertiser dollars.

As long as the show is a net positive for the network, they'll run it into the ground. Just look at the Walking Dead.

Season 6, that one was really bad. Season 7 is actually an improvement, thanks mostly to TITUS PULLO playing the villain and actually being a different character to the usual "Dexter's new serial killer pal". Then Season 8 is about the worst final season to a major show in history.

Making him too likeable and a hero. It ended up being to easy to root for him. Last season would have ideally ended with a courtroom drama.

The writers at some point straight up forgot that Dexter is you know, a villain. Kills bad guys, sure, but he's still a psychopathic murderer, at some point later in the show they forgot this and started portraying him like some kind of Batman hero character. It's basically the reverse of Breaking Bad where Walter transforms to a despicable piece of shit (and actually probably always was deep down) over the course of the show, instead Dexter goes from controlled monster to superhero. But it's not an arc, the writers just stopped understanding the character.

Or the season that the entire premise of the show seemed to be made for, a final season where he's exposed as the serial killer and is on the run from his former co-workers. I can't believe they did 8 seasons and never did this.

The writers were entirely female by the end of the series.

this character's treatment wound up really epitomizing how fucking awful the writing got. Not her specifically, but rather Yvonne Strahovski's utter Mary Sue love interest character from the last two seasons.
Dexter is about the worst parent alive and spends all his time murdering people instead of raising his half-orphaned toddler son and so the live-in babysitter (Jamie? I think it was Jamie) basically raises him 24/7 since he was a baby, for years. You would legitimately expect him to start thinking she's his mother.

But no, instead Yvonne Strahovski's fem-Dexter characters meets his son for like five minutes and he instantly thinks of her as his mother. Not the girl who'd been actually raising him daily for basically his whole life. No the random love interest.

This was where I realized absolutely no one on the show behaved like human beings anymore. They just bent and twisted to some fantasy the writers were living out with Dexter as some superhero with his superhero wife.

It was, but the show had nowhere to go after that

Dexter basically became a normal dude. In S1 it was actually fun and interesting seeing him try to fit in and act like a normie, but later he's the most emotional drama queen of them all

I read the first 3 books. I'm sure there were subtle differences between the first book and first season, but nothing major. It was a fine adaptation for TV, but the TV writers had no idea what to do next.

Fourth, his sister finds out and is disgusted by it, Bryan doesn't die and Laguerta gets killed. Also Bryan is just a killer who enjoys what he does, he doesn't have some obsession with Dexter, he just wants to recruit him to his side of killing whoever he wants.
Really the most obvious one is the way Dexter is portrayed, he's a real serial killer, not some pansy with a crisis of conscience every 20 minutes.

I took several years off from watching after the season where Trinity killed Dexter's wife and when I came back to watch it I realized how melodramatic the show is, how am I supposed to take a guy seriously when he constantly sounds like the guy who wrote the original Coldsteel meme.
