David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were hired to adapt a book, not to write its conclusion - They are skilled at adapting book content for television, as is clearly evident from seasons 1-4, but once they ran out of content, they had no choice but to write their own with only breadcrumbs left by GRRM. We can see that their writing is below average to say the least.

The show was greenlit with the expectation that it will not surpass the books - When the show started filming in 2009, we were just two years away from ADWD, and the first season aired in the same year. The show was supposed to slowly sail through books (which it had done). TWOW and ADOS would be obviously released before the show ran out of content.

GRRM wrote himself into a corner - with a story this expansive and large, it's no surprise he is having trouble bringing all these characters and their standalone story arcs to a satisfying conclusion.

The show's target audience changed and influenced the direction of the show

D&D shot themselves in the foot when they decided to end with Season 8 - HBO themselves offered D&D funding for more standard-length seasons, but D&D declined because they cannot conjure meaningful storytelling for 10-20 more episodes. What we can see now is a concoction of GRRM's breadcrumbs and piss-poor D&D storytelling adhesive that tries to hold those crumbs together. Not a very good duo.

At the very least they should have had 10/11 episodes. I think a lot of the poor writing stems from rushing scenes and adjusting plotlines to make schedule.

Idk but I really like this season, the first and second episodes triggered some emotional response inside of me seeing all the different characters back together and the third episode was just awesome.
The only gripe I have with the third episode is that the important characters stayed alive too long and felt a bit unrealistic and also a bit cliché. But fuck it Bros, name one (1) fantasy series better than GoT, you already know the protip.

GRRM opened a lot of plot points that needed wrapping up so S8 writing boils down to finding ways to write out as many things as fast as possible so we can get to what constitutes the bare minimum ending

Dialogue is seriously weak. It used to be one of the strong points of the show but this season is all just characters spouting corny capeshit-esque one-liners at each other.

I mean ever since Daenerys sat foot in Westeros the series has gone downhill. There were some red flags before that happened but nothing at least I cared too much about. I would say it's the lack of source material that really illuminate how talentless D&D are at writing. They don't give a shit about character arcs and they make these weird plot decisions based on what surprises the audience and what looks good on screen instead of what actually makes sense. Prime example is the Dorthraki horde riding straight into the dead while the trebuches on the fucking front line fires a volley. I wont lie, it looks so fucking dope. But it makes no fucking sense. Nothing of the defences made any sense that episode. They have like all these really experienced character who have fought and planned many battles yet that is how the battle of winterfell plays out?!
