Honest non-circle-jerky opinion: Alita: Battle Angel (2019) could have been one of the greats, but its shoehorned teenage romance weighs it down and prevents it from being the instant classic it could have been. It seems to imply any coming-of-age story needs a generic love interest for the protagonist to grow emotionally -- which is somewhat insulting to anyone who never experienced teenage love and grew into an adult just fine, like this user.

Where one might have come to expect a little bit of Ghost in the Shell (1995) or Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) from James Cameron, they are forced instead to sit through some sappy teenage romance in the first half which may be sweet to some but out of tone in a story that deserves better. The titular protagonist Alita (Rosa Salazar) is equal parts adorable and inspiring as her body evolves along with her mind from wide-eyed naive teenager to confident young woman. However the story is burdened by making her inexplicably infatuated with Hugo (an insufferable Keean Johnson), an opportunist more interested in jacking (off) cyborg parts than reciprocating her feelings.

There's a wonderful early scene where Hugo takes Alita by the hand to lead her to an abandoned church roof and he opens up about his dream of one day going up to the floating city of Zalem. Unfortunately, that's the best his character will get. By the time the story reminds itself it is cyberpunk action above all and finally drops him out of the picture like one discards a used tissue into the garbage bin, it is already too late. I give it a 7.5/10.
