During the siege by Stannis, even BEFORE that, they were sending the gold cloaks to forage and pillage the peasant lands to feed the city. Highgarden had to bring in food and lock the throne into debt. They ALWAYS worry about the citizens rioting because they're hungry, as if it's the king's sole duty to feed them. They ALWAYS warned that when winter showed up then there'd be no food to feed the city, but no one cares about what'd happen outside of it and south of The Neck. Why are the characters even acting like assaulting King's Landing is wrong? Defeated cities are sacked, especially in this universe. Tywin sacked King's Landing even after taking it without a fight and nobody gave a shit.

There was really no reason for the whole thing. The whole plotline pretty much involved replacing the leaders of Dorne with literal whos who would support Dany when she invaded.
But Doran ALREADY had plenty of reasons to support Dany. Two lines of dialogue would have sufficed to explain his motives to the audience without the absolute shitfest we got instead.

There's no time to introduce the new Dornish Prince in the show. It's like the showrunners want us to forget that Dorne, Qarth, or Mereen exist.
