Dany is also meant to be a tragic character who watches everything slowly around which she loves either betray her or die as a teenage rape victim. No shit she doesn't have the best military sense. Because 99% who go there dont come out. One of Targaryens went there on a dragon and when she came back some kind of fucked up worms and other nasty shit ate her from inside out. Volantis sent a whole fleet which was never heard from again, and theyre a spitting distance from Valyria. Also some Lannister went there to retrieve a valyria. sword and treasure and was never heard from again.

The place is a deathtrap no matter if you go in with a dragon, a fleet or with a single ship.
