RMKB reactors can't explode

You don't need water, it's just 3,6 roentgen.

Attached: radiation.jpg (1303x834, 231K)

B-but I've seen graphite blocks lying outside of reactor number 4...

I went and checked the reactor.
Everything is fine comrades.

Attached: fine.jpg (582x640, 45K)

ah, 3,6 roentgen, not that good, not that bad

what would you do if someone told you to commit suicide by going to the roof?

Attached: 1553864350151.png (332x425, 74K)

I wish we could teleport all the faggotass slavboos, tranniejannies, and marxists with unironic hammer and sickle flags in their homes back to the first responders of Chernobyl and force them to sweep graphite until they collapse.

Suicide by guard immediately

Or we could just talk about the show

anyone else tastes metal ?

I think he probably knows he's dead no matter if he goes to check or not.

I-I do. WTF?!

clearly not enough WATER

What do you mean "there is no core"?

Isn't graphite the stuff pencils are made of?

>explosion at a nuclear reactor
>instead of getting the fuck out of there, people actually go up to it

Why are slavs so retarded

based and bluepilled

Would you have went up to the roof, Yea Forums?
Surely you wouldn't disappoint the state, right?

Yes lets talk about the absolute slav retardation that led to the event portrayed in the show.

Was it seriously still that bad? I thought all that paranoid le-do-what-you're-told-or-get-shot shit was exclusive to Stalin's era. Gorbechev was a real westaboo by previous standards and were only like 3 years away from the fall of the union.

T. Dyatlov

Hey comrades I'm going to get a better view of the fire anyone wanna come?

Wouldn't have done it if there was a fucking GUARD RIGHT THERE.

not that kind of thread pal

This show is complete fiction based on some true events right?
No way they would condemn literally thousands of people to die like that right?

Yes, exactly. That's why you people should stop with the fear mongering, somebody just broke a couple of extra large pencils on the roof of reactor number 4. No big deal.

No. I'm not feeling too good comrade, must be the water.

Attached: 1557214830495.jpg (341x364, 22K)

Here’s the thing: you know the situation is fucked, and millions are in danger, but your stupid fucking bosses don’t believe your readings. Yes, going up there will kill you, but maybe, just maybe, if you do it they will believe you, as it is your field of expertise, and take the situation seriously, saving said millions.

It's even twinkling. My kids will love it.

you didn't see graphite

a lot of the survivors ended up doing 5-10 years in labor camps, or killing themselves, attempting suicide, having nervous breakdowns, etc.

Well, actually...

>Was it seriously still that bad?
Yep.
Because Gorbi was full westaboo only USA
Also, there were still shitton of stalinists, especially in KGB

>entire show is about retard drunk slavs fucking up so bad they caused the worst nuclear disaster in history
>"i-its not that kind of thread"
The funny thing is that if this happened in the US or NatSoc Germany, faggot slavboos would never shut the fuck up about it.
Also 7.62x54r is anemic as fuck compared to 7.62x51. You guys have pussy guns because your weak slav frames cant handle recoil.

Pripyat was evacuated 36 hours after the accident.

I wonder if will they show:

Force abortions to everyone in X km radius

The Elephant's foot burning at infinite degrees.

this guy is delusional, get him out of this thread

Their was a hot spot in the core that thier sensors could not detect, and The control rods were tipped with lead, which actually made the nuclear reaction worse when they were reinserted, causing the water in the reactor the vaporize instantly causing the core to explode

He ate a fucking fat load of almost direct exposure to it.
Unironically better off killing himself after he told his superiors.

>mfw everybody gets sick because of the water

I don't get the table.
Am I missing something or are they not saying the required duration of exposure to each dosage for the effects occur?
Or is it immediate?

They said chernobyl and the surrounding area won't be fully safe for at least 20k years. So all we can do is make better shields on top of it? Could it ever fail? What about the people working on site these days? Do they all wear those nuclear suits?

the water is normally glowing right?

When your reactor core melts through concrete creating a gateway to hell itself I think you're just fucked either way.

This is a close approximation to looking directly into a reactor, but it would be worse, since you're being physically hit by escaped neutrons that are large enough to destroy your DNA.

you can walk around the area perfectly fine, you might want to wear a mask since dust can still be radioactive and you don't want to inhale it.
you also wouldn't want to touch anything that could of been made radioactive. like anything metal.

But as i understand it you can walk around and radiation levels are the same as anywhere else in the world.

I'm willing to suspend my disbelief on this one, no one wants to watch ruskies slav the place up. Slavs may have white skin but they are essentially niggers at heart

>Radiation shielded Gopro Hero 3+ Silver sent through electron beam irradiator. Looking directly up off of a 45 degree stainless mirror at 3/4" thick acrylic plate and 1000rem (10Sv) dosimeter sticker on bottom of plate as they pass under the irradiation beam. Note how fast the dosimeter turns black as it nears the beam. It is fully black even before it passes under the beam. This is due to electron bremsstrahlung from the electron beam hitting the carts. The acrylic continuously discharges as it passes under the beam due to the rough cut edges. GoPro is enclosed in a 1/4" thick lead box with a 1" thick, 50% lead glass window. Additionally there is a 1/4" thick lead plate above the camera box to provide shielding from direct irradiation from the beam.

Anything over 4 Sv basically kills you. Camera was only exposed for a few seconds and this was enough to exceed 10 Sv, which are Ouchi levels of exposure aka dead man walking.

1. Nuclear power plants use radioactive elements
2. Being exposed to massive radiation is really bad for you

Brainlet leftists like to act smart until something that actually requires intelligence to understand happens, and then they act like because they cant understand it that it is stupid and makes no sense.

The KGB warned them that their reactor design could be flawed, but the Nuclear branch had powerful friends that let them do whatever they wanted, the technicians were told the core was 100% safe when in fact it had a fatal flaw in it's design that made the core extremely unstable at low power

I think he was being sarcastic by saying “I’m accountable you idiot, it’s my power plant”

But the other user is right too.

holy shit, I just realized that the dude that helped the two other guys open the door to the reactor was Aleksandr Yuvchenko and that he is still alive. He is the main guy features in the Discovery docudrama (Zero Hour)

>Despite Yuvchenko's explanation that there were no control rods left, the four climbed a stairwell to Level 35 to survey the damage; Yuvchenko held open the massive door into the reactor room and the other three proceeded in to locate the control rod mechanism; after no more than a minute of surveying the reactor debris, enough for all three to sustain fatal doses of radiation, they returned, their skin darkened with "nuclear tan" in reaction to the high radiation dose.

The three were the first to die in the Moscow hospital. Yuvchenko meanwhile suffered serious beta burns and gamma burns to his left shoulder, hip and calf as he kept the radioactive-dust-covered door open. It was later estimated he received a dose of 4.1 Sv. At 3:00 am, he began vomiting intensely; by 6:00 am, he could no longer walk. He later spent a year in the Moscow hospital receiving blood and plasma transfusions and received numerous skin grafts.

I'm ashamed of you, Yea Forums.

I didn't say that. I said the bulk majority of total deaths caused in the Soviet Union came as a result from the German invasion of WW2.

trumpettes cant help it, they constantly feel under attack because their president is a corrupt retard and they know it but in their head its not a meme anymore to them but some stupid hill they have to die on

>duh - why didn’t they just run away, user?
how do you respond?

So the guard sent to escort him (and kill him if he didn't comply) was almost certainly exposed to a lethal does of radiation too, right?

That shot was fucking haunting

they followed proper procedure.
Too bad the procedure was flawed.

give it a rest dude. this shitty political baiting is ruining this fucking board

Cool, thanks for the info.
As has been already said thought, if you wanna have this discussion do so elsewhere.

They were doing a test to see how backup equipment behaved. More specifically, if the ±1 minute it took for the diesel generators to kick in was a problem for the coolant pumps. They performed the test at a way lower thermal power output than allowed by the rules.

Probably not. Concrete is good for shielding. The guard didn't look over the edge.

See Elephant's Foot. A quick glance at it would kill you later. Standing around the corner is safe.

>(and kill him if he didn't comply)
Imagine actually believing this, lmao.

that roof was death. so yes.

For the last time, radiation suits don't exist.

Gamma radiation and neutrons can only be blocked by lead and concrete. Unless they start making suits out of lead and concrete which would make them weigh thousands of pounds, you are still getting hit with radiation even with modern suits.

Fucking russians treated a nuclear reactor like a new microwave oven. Read the manual? Fuck that!

That's how brainwashing works, a bunch of powerful people get the peons to vote against their interests and not only that but defend them in the process even when they don't fulfill any of their promises.

people were sent up to that roof to clear rubble. They were allowed 90 seconds per person to shovel rubble.
Radiation was extreme up there.
They initially tried to use a robot to clear the rubble but the radiation fried it.

no they did not. The test was supposed to be conducted at no less than 700MW. The actual power was 200MW - and they violated a lot of regulations to achieve that after they almost completely shutdown the reactor. This led to a very unstable configuration that should never and would never happen if they did everything right.

But he was almost directly exposed to the source after just a few hours of t0.
If not lethal, would he have any symptoms? Like what the firefighters showed in the show.

There's a difference between moving radioactive material, inhaling radioactive dust, and physically looking at a reactor core which exposes you to IMMEDIATE FUCK YOU RADIATION.

They could've at least tried to do a Ukrainian accent

well yea, the guy in charge was a fuckwit who DID do wrong.
But the individual guys beneath him can't really be blamed i think.

Holy fuck he survived?

Looks like HBO kino is back on the menu.

Attached: forest.jpg (1920x1080, 402K)

Inhaling radioactive dust (we saw lots of that) would probably give him lung cancer 5-10 years down the road.

Is the forest instantly dead? Is that why it's brown or is it just the light?

It would sound like crap. Dyatlov's accent did piss me off a couple of times since he sounds like Harry the Hatchet when he yells but it would sound even worse if they had some weird-ass Russian/Ukrainian accent.

wake up everyone in the block
grab some kielbasa and vodka and watch this shit while the kids play with the random ash falling from the sky

Oh shit didn't catch that.

A quick glance at the elephant's foot won't kill you.

Since the nuclear fuel got so hot, it melted the graphite core, concrete, and lead around it. That's essentially what the elephant's foot is - a mixture of all that shit in one. Alpha and beta radiation can be stopped by your skin and a rad suit respectively. Gamma radiation and neutrons are stopped by parts of the concrete and lead slushie of the elephant's foot itself. It's still active and giving off some radiation today but like I said, a quick glance won't kill you as much as looking into an active core 30 years ago. Now do you want to be in the room any longer then 5 minutes? No, but a quick glance won't hurt.

Also see this pic:

Guys. This shit is so kino. The lighting. The sound. The everything. I've havnt enjoyed something like this in a long time.

Only an x ray.

>They could've at least tried to do a Ukrainian accent
it would be a very retarded.

maybe it's just the light, but honestly i think it's artistic liberties given that they were portraying birbs falling out of the air and the ash fallen on children...foreshadowing the nasty shit that's about to happen.

That's the Red Forrest. Got hit by so much radiation that it died and turned that color. Most of the dead trees were bulldozed and buried. Nowadays people are worried that a fire could mean more radioactive shit floating above Europe again.

That's fucking horrifying. But don't some of them also linger inside your body bouncing around and also shooting out of you sometimes? I mean when you get exposed you yourself start to spread this shit around, right?

Right, I don't think Akimov personally did anything wrong, but it seems like he thought that they as a whole crew dindu nuffin and had no idea why the things went as wrong as they did.

He is still alive to this day. He was not the only one to survive, Dyatlov obviously did (as literally the first scene states that he lived to be tried and sentenced). Quite a few guys that were inside the power plant during the explosion actually survived.

Why is this board moving so fast lately? Can't even enjoy a chernobyl thread properly.

dude, if chernobyl was a bomb, it was 5714% bigger than hiroshima bomb

You're right. Up to 5 minutes and you're most likely dead.

was dyatlov the guy who went to prison?

Thank God they spared our ears the atrocity that is Ukrainian """"language""""

Someone in another thread mentioned that some of those particles (alpha particles) are too weak to exit your body, so they bounce around inside. What this'll do is stuff like liquefying your intestines, making your muscles fall off your bones, stuff like. You also leak 10L of liquid per day.

No. Dyatlov is the guy that didn't believe any of his subordinates and thought EVERYTHING IS PERFECT.

Thank you

the reactor works by splitting uranium atoms, this releases neutrons which go off and split more uranium atoms releasing more neutrons.
Those neutrons can go through your body, bouncing off random atoms it comes into contact with, generating heat each time it bounces.
So yea. Basically.

>that "are you fucking kidding me" look she gives the doc when he asks why they the hell they would have iodine pills

The trees died. But not in a day i think. A bit of creative license.

Yeah, capeshits should definitely get the fuck out of here. Mods do nothing about it.

FYI the Kursk incident was an inch away from blowing its reactor and causing another Chernobyl by the way.

yea, they were certainly responsible for putting the reactor core in such a critical state.
The problem was the "emergency shutdown" switch was literally the thing that put the reactor over the tipping point.

Not 'the' guy, many people were sentenced for Chernobyl - including Bryukhanov and Fomin. And Dyatlov too.

Include this video in the new thread

Technically you can be made and considered radioactive material to other after enough exposure but that dose would have to be so large you would be dead on the spot long before that happened.

Is rubble Ivan, good for garden decorating and weddings.

The animals have deformities though, some birds mutated to not have tail feathers anymore or some shit like that.

Yes. But right now i guess the ecosystem adapted so it should be fine.

>The sinking of the nuclear-powered Oscar-class submarine Kursk (Russian: Project 949A Aнтeй Atomnaya Podvodnaya Lodka "Kursk" (APL "Kursk")), took place during the first major Russian naval exercise in more than ten years, in the Barents Sea on 12 August 2000, killing all 118 personnel on board. Nearby ships registered the initial explosion and a second, much larger, explosion which registered 4.2 on the Richter scale on seismographs as far away as Alaska, yet the Russian Navy did not realise that the sub had sunk and did not initiate a search for more than six hours. By the time it declared an emergency 11 hours later, the crew were — unknown to anyone — all dead. Because the sub's emergency rescue buoy had been intentionally disabled, it took more than 16 hours to locate the sunken boat.

> The government misled and manipulated the public and news media, and refused help from other governments. President Vladimir Putin initially continued his vacation at a seaside resort, and only on the fifth day authorized the navy to accept British and Norwegian offers of assistance.

>The official investigation, after most of the wreck was raised along with analysis of pieces of debris, concluded that the crew of Kursk was preparing to load a dummy 65–76 "Kit" torpedo when a faulty weld in its casing leaked high-test peroxide (HTP), causing the torpedo's kerosene fuel to explode.

This all sounds very familiar

Did you miss the part where the 400+ ton upper biological shield was thrown into the air and then crashed on top of the busted reactor?

>do you fault me for not believing in HBO?
Yes they have produced pure kino even during GOT like TD3, Sharp Objects, and The Young Pope. Also some kino documentaries like Andre the Giant

Attached: Red_forest.jpg (772x521, 121K)

i wish they kinda showed the explosion and immediate events beforehand. Although the show works really well where it starts.

01:23:45 – The 1000 ton lid above the fuel elements is lifted by the first explosion. The release of radiation starts. Air reaches the reactor and the oxygen results in a graphite fire. The metal of the fuel tubes reacts to the water. This is a chemical reaction which produces hydrogen, and this hydrogen explodes: the second explosion. Burning debris flies into the air and lands on the roof of Chernobyl Unit 3.

I said for the most part, Wolves and some other birds show no signs of mutation, they can't explain why, on the other hand animals like Pigs that have been said to be genetically similar to humans received fatal mutations

>yea, they were certainly responsible for putting the reactor core in such a critical state.

The entire problem started with the power of the reactor dropping below safety level due to xenon-135 poisoning. Not sure who is to blame - I'm not sure anyone knows the answer to that, since Toptunov and Akimov died in agony soon after the accident and they would probably be able to explain who did what and why.
This is what started the chain reaction of fuckups. The xenone poisoning caused low power, which caused them to remove almost all the control rods, which was the most important factor in causing the disaster. Not only did it prevent the automatic system (and the engineers themselves) from controlling the reactor when it started heating up, it also caused the SCRAM to increase the power so much for a short while

That reviewer is an idiot. Telegraph gave it 5 stars and the BBC basically calls it pure kino.

Nuclear power reactors are basically just giant steam engines that use nuclear fission to create heat instead of fire, just like boilers of old steam locomotives they can explode from the pressure of the boiling water created withing them.

I don't recall all the details but basically there was some design flaw in the reactor made it temporarily increase energy output when the control rods were lowered, none of the control room staff were aware of this and they had basically overheated the reactor already by shutting off all cooling so they could increase power output.

So when they tried SCRAMing the reactor, all that beyond boiling hot water under pressure got a sudden heat surge that basically exploded the reactor.

IIRC wasn't the lid like 2 tons and it blew off into the air with tremendous force?

Enjoy you and your whole family getting shot at best or getting shipped to a gulag because you attacked an old member of the party. He might even be one of the OG revolutionaries so you'll be doubly fucked.

The Guardian is a very left wing newspaper, I think they secretly just hate it because it isn't diverse enough. (No joke)

Attached: kek4.png (500x747, 315K)

according to the screenwriter (who said so in the official podcast) - they will. They will explain why and how the disaster happened in later episodes

Alpha particles are blocked by skin. Beta, gamma, and neutrons penetrate skin so they are the ones doing the bouncing around and scrambling the insides. Each cell has markers and checkpoints to detect replication errors. As soon as it notices those errors, it turns on inflammation and apoptosis. That's where the edema comes from - your own immune system struggling to repair and fix the damaged cells. You can't really give steroids and shut down the immune system because you have a bunch of broken cells that need to be removed. Too late to give iodine and stop the absorption in the thyroid gland. You can replenish white blood cells which come from the bone marrow with a transplant and give IV fluids for the burns but honestly, there's not much else they can do. Trying to treat radiation is harder then trying to treat cancer. Ironically, cancer can be treated with small doses of radiation but as for large doses of radiation - just try and avoid it.

God damn we reach bump limit quickly

>2 tons
try like a hundred times that. flipped like a coin and hit the roof, fell back down into the fire.

Jesus Christ that's a hell of a visual

Some fucker make a new thread.

Call it /cherg/ or something. I'm too lazy.

...

it's what collapsed the roof. the lid got blown 30 fucking meters into the air into the roof and fell back down onto the core vertically.

Uhm yeah, but I think user was talking about leaks and accidents in general, not the whole reactor core blowing up.

here's a re-enactment of what happened that day

Attached: 1440479232-01.jpg (600x800, 57K)

Lol, if the Guardian did the casting, they wouldn't care about historical accuracy.

You can induce radioactivity in material by bombarding it with neutrons. But it's an extreme example and exposure to radiation isn't really going to make you radioactive, just irradiated. You can however be contaminated by radiation emitting particles by getting them on your skin, or ingesting them. Like when a reactor explodes and catches fire, and you are covered in the smoke and dust just like at Chernobyl. That will super fuck you up because the most strongly ionizing types of radiation have the poorest penetration ability, so you are relatively safe from them unless the emitters are close to or inside of you.

>implying I have a family
>implying I would give a fuck even IF I had a family

Pussies like you are the reason the government does what it wants without consequences.

>Akimov opposed conducting the test in such conditions of the reactor, but was ordered to continue by his superior. The reactor was in an unstable, unsafe state for a test to be run, but his superior, Anatoly Dyatlov threatened him with job termination. Akimov continued the test because of this.

Guardian journos aren't tankies though, they're London lefties who worship equality and diversity above almost everything.

> millions are in danger
237 people ended up dying. The whole thing is insanely overhyped by anti nuclear shills and hippies...

No they don't you fucking autist. That "bib" they put on you at the dentists is just as a precaution. X-rays barely release any radiation in the first place.

>When a nuclear explosion occurs, radiation – including gamma radiation – is released into the atmosphere. Gamma is just one type of radiation that gets released in such an explosion – alpha and beta radiation is also released – but ensuring protection against gamma radiation is far more important than protection against the other types. Gamma radiation is much higher-energy and has the ability to penetrate far more deeply into the body than the other types – meaning that, without adequate radiation protection, it could be much more damaging.

>In order to protect wearers against gamma rays, the American Nuclear Society says that the thickness of a gamma radiation suit needs to be the equivalent of one of the following: approximately 13.8 feet of water, 6.6 feet of concrete, or 1.3 feet of lead. Without that kind of heavy-duty protection, a radiation shield will simply not provide adequate protection against gamma radiation.

Why do you think nuclear power plants have so much thickness of lead and concrete in the core and in the walls? That's the amount of protection your suit needs to stop neutrons and gamma radiation.

How did they do it?

The show is very specifically about USSR incompetence in particular it pushes no modern political agenda in my opinion

They didn't have to invent anything or add any other bullshit. Just follow the events as they unfolded and make it look good. Some college drop-out with a wikipedia page about Chernobyl couldn't fuck up the writing if the tried.

Why do you think he was being escorted all the way to the roof, you boot licking mong? Why do you think he needed an escort in the first place? It was to ensure he complied and to kill him if he did not. They had already resolved to cut the phone lines and trap the people in their own city. Do you really think the Soviet socialists were beyond summary execution in order to keep everything under wraps? Go look up the Great Terror of 1936-1938.
