It's quite clear that they originally casted this show fully expecting it to flop after the first season.
Hence they got stuck with a crop of untalented no-names in large roles. I thought the bad acting added to the campfy charm of the show early on, but it really starts to grate.

A real loss. He was a superb actor. I hated his character in a way that I have never hated another character before. His body language, the facial expressions, the cold evil look in his eyes, and the snide sarcasm in his voice all combined to make me loathe this character with raging passion.
